What do you think about using abridged classics for young children? I have a few…Black Beauty, Pinnochio, and a couple of others. My children -one just turned 8 (but a great reader-reads above his age) and one about to turn 6 in a few months.
Will we be missing out on a lot of the poetry of words? Since I have not read any of these myself!
We have stayed away from abridged versions – they are usually poorly done and we have always felt why bother. I would rather have a few full length books, than a cupboard full of abridged books. I think if the author wanted us to read the abridged version he would have written it that way in the first place. You ask what you will be missing – in my humble opinion you will miss a lot – the intent of the author can never be fully expressed in an abridged form – so try and get the full version, you won’t be disappointed. If you ever have time, read both and then you will really see the difference. Linda
