I have been given lots of books that would definately be considered twaddle…I have been wanting to get rid of them but can’t bring myself to because my kids love them. And also I don’t actually read the books to my children. I have kept them because they will often “read” them to me. They look at the pictures and make up a story based on the pictures, which I think is a good thing…but sometimes I wonder, so I figured rather than contiue to worry about it I would just ask your opinions. What do you think? TIA!
I think the key is to consider what works for your family. We sometimes allow limited twaddle as a break following a particularly difficult or lengthy piece of literature to be read during free reading time, or allow a somewhat “twaddle-y” dvd (especially cartoons) to be viewed as a treat that was earned. We just make sure it isn’t something offensive (bathroom humor or encouraging wrong attitudes).
I sort of equate it to the occasional fast-food meal. No, it’s not gourmet….no, it’s not necessarily nutritionally-balanced…..but once in a great while, it makes a nice reward, it’s fun for the kids, or it’s a last-minute-change-of-schedule-necessity, kwim? You wouldn’t want a steady diet of it, but it might be okay once in awhile.
I’d have to say that having your children make up their own stories from the pictures is a very imaginative way to ‘recycle’ those books!
We had a lot of twaddle before we really understood what twaddle was. It wouldn’t have been fair to my kids to get rid of all those books at once, so we did it in stages. As we gave away a few books, we would make sure to replace them with something more worthy of reading. Over two years into this, they still have plenty of good reading material without any of it being something that makes me cringe. It’s a step-by-step process!
