I’m loving the fact the all of our family assignments and individual assignments are on a “do the next one” system. My question is when transitioning from a family assignment, say “read x book on Egypt” to an individual assignment for just one or two of the kids say “do x project about Egypt”. When assigning for the individuals I don’t see a way to assign the task after a family assignment, when I hit start after it only shows their individual work (math, phonics, etc.).
Am i just missing an obvious solution? Is there a way to assign the project to them without picking a date?
Start after doesn’t mean do it the same day, after we do this…. It means I want to do this resource after we finished this other resource.
The best example I have is our Math course. I have Math 1b (in our course) scheduled for my daughter, and Math 2a scheduled for her to start after Math 1b. So once she has done the last lesson in her 1b course, it will automatically bring up the first lesson in her Math 2a course the next day. You can do this with unrelated books – for instance to say to start “Jungle Book” after they are finished “Understood Betsy”.
At the moment, the Daily Plan, (also called the To-Do list) is just ordered alphabetically by subject, not in any particular order to do it.
I think I understand what you are asking. You are reading a book about “Egypt” as a family, and you want each kid to do a project about it and those to be indicated with the organizer.
I think there is a “use with” indication, which I use to enter little odds and ends resources that I don’t want cluttering up my page but don’t want to forget about either. I don’t know what would happen to your use with resource if you marked finished on the original resource, though.
What I do in cases like you are describing is to make a resource called “Max – Egypt Project” for him and “Cecily – Egypt Project” for her and then mark them worked on until they finish. I might also just use my generic “Social Studies Activity” resource that I created for each of them and for the family, and I put in like 15-20 blank divisions, so I would write a note reflecting what they were working on – “Egypt Project” and describe it if I felt like it and mark it worked on and complete when they were done. Then the next blank spot pops up ready for the next project, magazine article, documentary, whatever we come across that it is more trouble than it is worth to make a special resource for it.
I have a bunch of these activities – art, math, language arts, whatever – entered as resources to help me catch moments when we do a bit of spontaneous work on something. It is amazing how much more I record when I have that ready made spot to take the entry.
My question probably wasn’t clear enough suzukimom. I understand the idea of “start after” and love the freedom that is giving me. My problem is just that if I want to schedule for one of my daughters to do a certain activity after we have read a certain book that I scheduled for the whole family there seems to be no way to do that. When I enter the activity for my daughter and hit “start after” it only gives me the option to start it after a resource that was originally scheduled just for her….not to start her activity after one that was scheduled for the whole family……
The start after and use with features only work within the same student’s schedule. You have to make the resource start after a resource that is already has scheduled for the same student. Family is treated like a separate student so that’s why you didn’t see the option.
