She tells you how to do nature study using The Handbook of Nature Study. I also purchased her Outdoor Hour Challenges: Nature Study Close to Home. VERY good. I’m not an outdoorsy kind of person even though we live on a farm so this holds my hand a bit.
Wow, Anna Comstock’s book is a pretty great hand-me-down! Combined with some living books and a nature journal and that’s all we use for our science & nature here. Reading through Part I on Teaching Nature Study tells you the hows and whys. I pick a few things out ahead of time per term (based on what is “in season” in our area of the States). Many times they come up with things of interest on their own. We then use it as a reference to dig deeper. Mainly, I am there to help them take a bit more time to observe – that is where the leading observation questions found in her book come in handy. There are also some really fun things to do (like making a cricket house).
Robin, Wow! That blog is amazing! I’m so glad you told me about it. I’m not outdoorsy either! I’m trying to take the kids to our amazing park once a week for a long morning or afternoon, and they are loving it! Today we saw a turtle up very close, and the trees were literally “raining” this white fluffy stuff – it looked like it was snowing! BUT – there I was thinking everything that flew by me was a wasp (which I’m terrified of) and feeling nervous about the kids climbing winding tree trunks for fear of snakes. I’m trying though – maybe by this time next year I’ll be a natural at this nature thing. 😉
Richele – I guess you’re right! I’m very thankful for any hand-me-down, especially when it works for our CM ed. I’m really excited to use it now…the cricket house sounds like something my kids would LOVE! Thanks!
Thanks for linking to this blog! I purchased this book to use for our nature studies, after I came across the recommendations in a couple of different places. I am so excited to see such a great blog related to this book. Thanks!
