Anyone familiar with this series by Ron Roy? They are “A Stepping Sone Book” from Random House.
My 5yo brought home 2 from the library because she would like to read them. They are a short chapter book (about 80 pages, 10-12 chapters, from a look at it…) She has been reading various books like Berenstein Bears and Dr. Seuss entirely on her own… and these do look like a fairly simple reading level.
I’m sure they aren’t going to be great literature, but it looks like they might be a great transition for her for reading chapter books on her own (and maybe my 7yo son would like them for that too)… I just don’t know if I’m going to have time to read through them right away.
My kids love them and we’ve read most of them. He is not the greatest writer and I’m sure they are twaddle but the story lines are pretty wholesome. They did help my older kids to enjoy reading on their own. Eventually I talked to them about how Ron Roy really isn’t a fabulous author and sometimes we need to read books that stretch our minds and sometimes it’s okay to relax with an easy book as long as it’s a nice one
I’ve wondered about those books, too. My dd 10 is not the most fluent reader, and she tried the Nancy Drew mysteries awhile back because one of her best friends loves them….and she found them a little too long and difficult to be really enjoyable. She does like mysteries, though, so perhaps these would be good for her and my ds 11 (who only reads at a late 2nd grade level but is soooo tired of baby-ish early readers).
My dd has been reading “The Puppy Place” series lately, but after the third one, she is getting bored with them. I think sometimes the twaddle becomes naturally apparent to them after awhile. Now if I could just convince dd (almost 13) to give up the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series….I’ve issued an edict that they can only be taken out of the library once every 6 weeks, one book at a time!

I loved mysteries when I was a child, as I recall the Bobbsey Twins was a bit easier reading the Nancy Drew. I also liked the Boxcar Children, which according to the wikipedia page was written by a 1st grade teacher and aimed and 2nd – 6th graders. Since I am completely new to CM I’m not sure how they’d rate, but they were enjoyable reading for me as I recall.
My dd just got the 1st one in the series for her birthday (just turned 8). They do look twaddly, but like someone else said, they are at least good story lines. My dd just told me she didn’t really like it, though, for what it’s worth. 😛
