Yeah! We got the schoolroom set up! We are so excited. I know not everyone dedicates one room to school…and we weren’t going to…we had it kind of spread out…and we were doing school at the table, on the couch, at small desks scattered about…etc. BUT, it wasn’t working for me. And I have had a breakthrough. I am going to do what works for me and for my family—instead of trying to incorporate ALL the FABULOUS ideas from everyone else (from books, friends, family, curriculums, and yes, even you ladies–y’all have GREAT ideas and solutions…even when you don’t agree!). I have had the hardest time with this. I read a lot of information mostly from really AWESOME sources and then I want to incorporate everything…I get in a conundrum when the information conflicts! So this is a really a breakthrough for me. I have applied this breakthrough to setting up the schoolroom, what material I feel we should cover this year, etc. It has been freeing! It’s like I have permission somehow to go forward. KWIM?
Jo, at the end of the day that is the secret – doing what works for your family and for you….there are many brilliant ideas on this forum and elsewhere but they don’t work for everyone at all times – so congratulations to you and enjoy. Linda
A friend used to say to me whenever I would get in a funk where I was stressing over everyone else’s opinions:
You ‘da mama!!
And I have always said, that is some of the best parenting advice I’ve ever received. Because nobody knows your children like you! I totally understand that feeling of being freed to do what you know in your heart is needed and good for your family.
Yay for you Jo….finding what works for your family and doing it makes for a better experience.
Two of my girls [in highschool] have desks set up in a room that is an extra room because that’s what works best for them. My two boys [jr. high] work with me in the living room…they take turns with the couches….but when one of my son needs to read he likes to go to his room.
I hear so many who do school at the kitchen table and thought we should do that but it never worked. The day goes much easier when we are doing what works for us.
Blessings and maybe you’ll consider posting a picture or a link for us to see your school room.
