A while back someone recommended A Sojourn in Africa. I’m having trouble finding info on what ages this book is appropriate for and just a general review — what it covers and how you use it. I’d love to hear from someone before I purchase. My boys are in 6th and 3rd and we are doing Mod 1 this year.
I’m not the person who originally recommended the book, but have mentioned it in a post or two. We aren’t finished with the book quite yet, but it replaced Letters from Egypt for us. The kiddos and I found that book very boring and I had a hard time reading it aloud with the very lengthy sentences. So we dumped LFE and got Sojourn in Africa. We all love Sojourn a lot. The kids have been really into it and always look forward to reading it. The age range in our house this past school year was 1st-8th grades. I’m not sure what exact age range is, but it’s definitely suitable for your children.
The book is about a girl named Kathryn who stays with her aunt for the summer in Canada (her parents are gone on a missionary trip to India). Over the course of the summer, Aunt Laura tells the children (Kathryn and her cousins – Laura’s children) various stories about her travels to Africa. There are 27 chapters and we’ve read 17 of them so far. All the stories have been very interesting and give good geographical information about Africa as well as different customs of the country. I highly recommend the book and we’ll be reading the other two books the author has written in the series.
We just used this in place of Letters from Egypt. Hope this helps you!
That is where I got it too. I might have like LFE better if I just read it to myself, but I really had trouble reading it outloud to my kids. They hated it too so that didn’t help the issue.
