Hello CMers!
I have come across a wonderful CM-friendly book that we are using for our study of American History. We are presently studying the Pioneers and the Westward Expansion. I found this wonderful book titled: A Pioneer Sampler, by Barbara Greenwood. It takes you through the daily life of a pioneer family in 1840. After each sweet and informative chapter, there are several interesting short sections that are purely informational/fact based, but are written in a very narrative format. Most of the chapters also have an activity or craft after this info section. It is so perfect! My kids are remembering the info due to the story and are finding the information sections useful. It is great! This same author has a similar but much shorter story called A Pioneer Thanksgiving, written about the same family, in the same style; it’s just way shorter.
Thought I would share this for anyone else doing American History – or just for interests’ sake. Enjoy!

We did this book too! (Just a note, it is a Candian History book…. but the lives back then between Canada and the US were very similar) It is also published under the name of “A Pioneer Sampler”
There are other books by that author.
There is also “A Pioneer Christmas”
“Pioneer Crafts”
“The Last Safehouse” -about the Underground Railway
“Gold Rush Fever” – about the Klondike
“Factory Girl” – child labour in 1912
and
“The Kid’s book of Canada”

Oh, those sound AWESOME! I love that time period of history (dh and I joke we were born in the wrong era LOL). These would be great! I will add them to my list. Thanks!
ETA: What age range would this book fit with? My school-age kids are 7 & 6, but we won’t get to the Pioneer stuff for a few years yet.

I have a 7th grader, 3rd grader, and K who listen. They just love the real-life “this is how they did it” aspects of these books. They are really well done!

My son was 6 when we did it – but I think it is meant more for roughly the 8yo-11yo crowd. Honestly it is a good read for pretty much everyone though.
To me it felt like a simpler “Little House on the Prairie” type of story, with great instructional information and activities after each chapter.
