I know I read somewhere on a post recently a question about how to listen to many narrations from readings the kids completed earlier in the day. My brain cannot find it.
Anyway, I have a new secret weapon to help with this – a voice memo recorder! I used my iphone during our exam week which worked well since I wanted to save those and in connected to my computer. Then I stumbled upon little Sony handheld digital recorders in the clearance aisle at Target. They were $10 each and made neat little gifts for my 11 and 8 yo kids. Now if I’m occupied teaching another kid something, they can record their narrations as soon as they finish a book and I can listen later.
Excellent, Christie! I think I was the one who asked the question. I had been thinking of picking one up because my older ds tends to rush and slur through his words when reading aloud. I thought if he could record himself and play it back he would be able to hear what I mean and work as slowing down and speaking more clearly. I never considered this other use for it, but it makes great sense! Now, to see what one would cost me…
I have been considering something like this for quite some time. I don’t have a large family but sometimes I am not able to listen to every narration and my 9yo ds still prefers to give an oral narration over writing. (He does like to draw so I need to be better prepared when it’s time for him to draw.) Sometimes my oldest is ready and I hate to make him wait, plus recording it would give them a chance to *hear* themselves and not have to wait on mom.
Great idea!
ETA: After the other discussion Christie brought forth and some reading I’d been doing, I realized that as much as I ask for narrations, I need to be asking for even more. This has been a very good habit for my dc and I can already see the benefits it is bringing forth. A little recorder would really help with that.
