My original post went wonky, so I am trying again.
Here is a link to our Parent Information Handbook. I modified it slightly for the web. It shows our purpose, history, leadership, costs, schedule, and more.
For the 2011-2012 year we will accept no more than 30 families/75 kids. This is a bit of a decrease as this year we limited to 100 kids, but it’s a good thing. Two new groups are forming from ours so some families are moving over to those groups.
In 2011-2012, we’ll be a strictly CM group keeping the best of what we’ve offered for 2 years and adding in fine arts family groups and Shakespeare. Many of these new ideas came from the Sage Parnassus blog and other misc. places online.
I hope this is helpful to some. I’ve been asked numerous times here and elsewhere to share what we do, so I thought I’d post here.
Thanks for sharing this information with us. It looks very interesting. To have that many CM families involved must be very exciting. I would love to be able to get some time of support group going for CM families in our area. Not sure about dong a co-op but it would be nice for maybe some monthly support meeting to talk and share ideas.
We’ve always had Mom Chat, a monthly fellowship and support group. This year we’ve had mini-CM lessons at Mom Chat.
Fall 2011, we’ll continue with Mom Chat, but add a Learning with Charlotte study group that will meet perhaps bi-monthly. This will give us some real study time together where we will use CM’s original writings and some modern translations, too.
Would you mind sharing ‘why’ you keep the group the size at 30 families/75 children?? I have my guesses but would love to hear your thoughts. knowing you have quite a bit of experience with homeschool groups I would appreciate your insight. I am part of a hs group and as it evolves (grows) I have questions/concerns of my own regarding its size.
We left a very large (120+ families) group to start RCHA. Many things were terrific about that group, but it was hard for my kids to make good friends. So when we began, we said 100 kids tops for co-op. That was in 2009 and we had 55 or so that year. In 2010 we were very near 100 and we’re wrapping up that year now. It’s been a great year in a lot of ways, but 100 kids is a lot to manage. Also, with including family fine arts in fall 2011, I need to think about how many we can easily accommodate with groups of families studying together. Realistically, 25-30 is the max. Part of the goal of our group is to allow deep, lifelong types of friendships to develop and that’s easier with fewer people, I think.
I’m really looking forward to fall 2011, it will be a great mix of what’s been working so well (hands-on classes) with the addition of what’s been missing (fine arts & family groups).
HTH,
Christie
