I’ve had several questions lately here and elsewhere about my CM co-op. I thought I’d share a bit about it here, in case it is helpful. Below is taken from our Parent Information Handbook. We are limiting 2011-2012 to 30 families and 75 kids. We do not plan to go higher than this again.
PURPOSE River City Homeschool Adventures is a Charlotte Mason style support group and co-op. We seek to encourage families interested in Charlotte Mason methods on this big adventure of homeschooling by learning about methods and sharing ideas, praying for one another and supplementing our children’s home education with cooperative group classes and events. There are many homeschool approaches, all of which are valid and successfully used by many families, however, RCHA, as a support group and co-op uses the Charlotte Mason Approach and seeks to help others understand and implement this approach. Everything we do will be in an effort to support a CM based education.
HISTORY RCHA is an off-shoot of another local group and was begun by Christie and Heather, both former members of that group. The old group experienced phenomenal growth in recent years resulting in a long waiting list and the leadership asked members to consider starting new groups to help meet the need that was so obvious. So, after prayer and consideration, Christie and Heather decided to start a new group based in our area of town. We began in January 2009 as a support group that met for weekly park play dates, monthly mom chat evenings and occasional parties and field trips. In September 2009, the co-op portion of RCHA began meeting Thursday mornings for classes for kids ranging from newborn to 10th grade. Fall 2010 brought much growth in numbers and ideas. We had 37 families and 97 kids in classes. In 2011-2012, RCHA will be a strictly CM group focusing on three areas: 1)handicrafts, life skills, hands-on learning, 2) family fine arts classes and 3) Shakespeare study. We are thrilled that two new sister groups are forming for the 2011-2012 year to help meet the needs of Florida homeschoolers. One is a CM styled group and the other is a small co-op for kids 2nd grade and under. We are thrilled to encourage these new groups in their efforts to support homeschoolers.
GROUP LEADERSHIP River City Homeschool Adventures is led by Christie and Heather, its founders, as well as a Leadership Team of 4 to 6 group members. Existing Team appoints new team members. Leadership Team Members must:
be a born again believer in Jesus Christ and active in their church fellowshiphave been homeschooling at least 1 yearcommit to accept leadership responsibilities
STATEMENT OF FAITH We believe in one God, the creator of all things, who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. “As Jesus was coming up out of the water, He saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” Mark 1:10-11
We believe that salvation comes only through the free gift of God, made evident in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
We believe that the Bible is the written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that it is the final authority for Christian faith and life. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
We believe that the role of a Christian is to glorify God and to be His example on earth. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39 and “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.” 1 John 2:6

Let’s always leave the building and grounds looking better than we found them. God has truly blessed us with a great facility so let’s be good stewards of His blessings!
I hope that’s helpful for any considering a co-op start up.
