Last night I came across a fiction book in our church library: Bouboukar, Child of the Sahara, by Marjorie Worthington, copyright 1962. I have read the book (135 pages) and think it would be great for reading with module 1. Has anyone else read or used this book? I did see that there are some copies on Amazon, but no pictures of the book. I would think it would be suitable for grades 1-6 level.
Bouboukar is an orphan whose life changes when he meets an woman visiting from America.
I searched for it in the bookfinder – no results. I think this is a worthwhile read. I am not sure that there was ever a second printing since 1962, so maybe it’s a ‘lost gem’.

Oh, I love finding ‘lost gems’. Have you looked to see if Lamplighter has re-published it? I am consistently amazed when I find an old book that they have previously ‘discovered’ it and re-distributed…love Lamplighter! I am putting this on my Mod 1 list – thank you.

ServingwithJoy I did not see it at Lamplighter, nor at AO. Here are the opening sentences that captured me. Well written, descriptive, living book.
“A small French plane appeared in the sky above the oasis of In Fallah in the Sahara Desert. Like a strange white bird, it cast a shadow on the sands below.
“Except for the gazelles who had been searching for grass on the outskirts of the town, there seemed to be no sign of life anywhere”
I loved this book, and found numerous themes that could be discussed. Truthfulness, compassion, justice to name a few. I hope others look for this book and love it too.
