Our plan for the fall is posted on my blog http://llljourney.blogspot.com/2010/02/freshman-year.html.

Hi Heather, love your blog by the way.  I just wanted to see how you like Write with the Best – we loved it and think it is a super writing program.  Linda

Heather, I noticed on your 9th grade list, you have piano and are using Alfred’s.  Can you tell me a little about it and how you like it.  My daughter who is unwell, would like to learn piano, but at this stage is not well enough to go out for lessons, we thought maybe it would be good for her to have a suitable keyboard and then a beginning course that she could use to start off with at her own pace at home.  Any suggestions would be great, in fact anyone out there who has info, I would appreciate it.  Thanks  Linda

    Linda,

I just got Write with the Best to implement in the fall, but it looks like a great match for my family.  I am excited to hear that you liked it.  We tried IEW, but it was just too *formula-ish*… it felt very unnatural.

My daughter takes piano lessons from a college student, so the Alfred’s is just an extra theory course.  You can see it at Amazon.  For independent lessons, the Andreola’s have reviewed Piano for Life over at CBD.

Thanks Heather, I appreciate the input about piano.  I will check out Piano for Life as it seems like a good thing for my daugher right now.

We used IEW for a year, but wanted some freedom in our writing, so to ring the changes we did Write with the Best and loved it.  One piece of advice – make yourself a copy that you can mark up as answer sheets for yourself.  There is a lot of underlining and things to do with various parts of speech etc, then to mark it there is just a long list of words under headings – so you end up having to search through looking for the words.  It became frustrating and time consuming, so I made my own copies got out the color pencils and made proper answer sheets so when it cam to marking it was a breeze.  Just a hint that may help.  Blessings, Linda

    Heather,

I had a questions about the French program you had on your 9th grade schedule.  I have a son that is going into 9th & he will be taking Spanish – which I see they have Spanish in that program too.  It looks great. My question is about French for elementary age.  My daughter will be in 6th and wants to take French.  Did your daughter take any French before the 9th grade and if so, what did she use?  Breaking the Barrier looks like it is just high school level.  Your Schedule is very impressive, I need to get busy on my sons.  I have been very nervous about high school, but I am sure we will be fine.

    Thanks,

Thanks, Heather, for the helpful link! I love that you include homemaking for credit. My oldest daughter volunteers 3 times a week with child-care at our church and I’d like to give her credit this fall (her freshman year)- what name would I give that as a subject? Child Care? Child Development?

    Dedra,

My daughter did not take French in 6th grade, but many moms on this site have talked about The Easy French for younger kids.  That probably would have been my choice.

I would call it Child Development and then have her read about the topic as well.  Maybe she could plan out some activities that are developmentally appropriate as well.
