Thanks so much, Christie, for the details on CAP and Landry. Any particular reason you lean to Landry only for science, and are looking at Classes by Beth, Center for Lit., LToW and the others as your short list for online writing classes?
I, too, like the idea of my children taking a writing class online, having to follow a format and having someone else grade and give feedback (maybe not for every class/year, but certainly we are going to try this). Just want to make sure I choose the right class/supplier.
Any further insight welcome…
And I hope we can count on you, Christie, to post this summer after your eldest daughter has taken Essay Styles by Classes by Beth to let us know how it went. Sounds very neat!
Angelina, Landry uses textbooks for a lot of their offerings in history or English lit. and their foreign language meets only once per week making those courses less appealing to me personally. CBB is new to me, but offers a class based on the CM style history I chose for next year. Essay Stlyes is similar in content to Jump In which I love and have been using successfully, but I have not finished all the essay types and won’t by year end. Since Essay Styles or a similar course is required for CBB history and lit. classes, I opted to knock it out over the summer. I’ll review it when dd finishes. I own Teaching the Classics by Center for Lit and like the Socratic discussion method as a tool in our belt. Joining the Spring term class was a last minute decision, but dd has really enjoyed both discussions. Doing literary analysis orally in a group is actually kind of fun. I like that it is once per month and not overloading her schedule. LToW intrigues me, I own it, but haven’t used it yet.
Thanks, Christie, for the additional details. Great info! I listened to one of the “sample” Socratic discussions on the Center for Lit website. It was great fun listening in! Glad to hear your DD is enjoying her class and hope it continues to be a great experience for her. I will definitely be looking into it further for my eldest boys, perhaps when they hit around age 12-13 (and to CBB as well). Like you, I am leaning to a greater focus on this kind of work for the grades 7-8 years.
Again, with thanks, Christie, for sharing so much. You really have been a wonderful help.
