Hello everyone! We just started school a week ago in Michigan. I’m asking for specific books for an 8th grader for science. Or a specific outline if anyone would like to share.
For 7th grade she studied astronomy, and part of the year Apologia Physical Science. That text has good content, but I found myself summarizing it for her as it’s too wordy. Then we switched to reading a few books on volcanoes, and weather.
I want her to be well prepared for high school science, although don’t expect her to be headed toward a science related field.
I have explored guest hollow and SabbathMoon but I’m looking for a concrete book list to use.
Doesn’t Sabbath Mood have a concrete book list, even a planned curriculum, for middle school? For that matter, Guest Hollow has complete curriculum planned out as well.
Have you looked at Ambleside Online’s year 8 science?
We used Apologia General Science in 8th grade so I’m not much help there.
My daughter has really enjoyed The Elements by Theodore Gray. It’s a beautiful, hardcover book that has a 2 page spread for each element with wonderful pictures and engaging text. We read through some of it in the 7th grade (as scheduled by Ambleside Online year 6) and we are saving it to read again as we do chemistry in the 10th grade. We also enjoyed It Couldn’t Just Happen by Richard something or other. It’s written from a creationist point of view and is full of short chapters detailing the intricacies of various creatures and other science topics. This one was another one assigned in AO’s year 6.
John Hudson Tiner’s books are really good and I think reading through a few of his “The World Of” books would be a great preparation for high school science.
