So I am wondering how many books you schedule your 8th grader (or think would be managable) to read a term?

Let’s just say (so I can gage better) the books are all about 150 pages.  This is not our spine books, this is the “other” reading, things like literature, culture books, nature study books, personal development.

Would you say 3 a term? 5 a term? 1 book a week?  What are your thoughts for the “average” reader.  Thanks Misty

I have two sons in that age category.  One of them will read at least one extra book a week, often more. (If the book was only 150 pages, that would be done in a day.)  The other one probably reads closer to two a month, and that is with me “encouraging” him.  My guess is that the ‘average’ is somewhere between the twq.

I don’t normally have my 8th grader read a set # of books a term, that would stress him out.  I usually have books scheduled for 1 ch. a day/oral or written narration (this is averaging to 3 ch. a week) or 1 ch. a week, depending on the book.

History: 1 ch. a day, usually accomplishes this

    PD: 1 ch. a week/with discussion questions

Storybook of Science: 1 ch. a week/written narration

Uncle Eric books: 1 ch. a week/written or oral narrations

    Lit: 20-30 min.-1 ch. a day/written or oral narrations

I would love to see my son read more than he does on his personal time, but I’m just glad that he reads as much as he does right now.  He’s not the type to pick up a book on his free time, unless it’s science-y related, but will read what I have scheduled for him no problem.  And, he loves to listen to audio books/read alouds and is still involved in our family subjects which can add up to several books a week.
