I am going to be moving to a more cm approach with my 7th grader this year. We have dabbled with it off and on the whole time and each time my heart finds its way back here again. I am looking for some book recommendations for us to read and narrate from (planning to do a combination of both oral and written). I am good with literature. What I am hoping for are suggestions for history and science.
I am also curious how often you read from history and science with your 7th graders. The one thing we have never really enjoyed is spacing out our readings over weeks, but rather prefer to read a bit 2-3 times per week until we finish. I think my plan is to alternate back and forth between science and history.
What period of history will you be studying? I like H.A. Guerber’s books for that age and she has books on most periods of history.
Are you planning on covering a certain branch of science or just reading a books on a variety of topics? Jeanne Bendick has written some good scientist biographies. I also like John Hudson Tiner’s books.
SCM’s Stories of the Nations or Stories of America (haven’t used yet, but they look great)
Aesop’s Fables
Arabella Buckley’s Eyes and No Eyes series
various biographies for history & science
Drive Through History DVDs
The 101 Series DVDs (these are new for us, but they loved the first episode)
There are some great blogs for finding good books. Wildflowers & Marbles, Living Books Library, Guest Hollow, and Sabbath Mood Homeschool are a few of my favorites.
This year we’ll be scheduling in 1 history reading and 1 science reading/activity per day. Our science will include some experiments & DVDs in addition to readings. The history readings will also include geography and Bible/church history topics. My 9th grader has a daily Apologia reading, so she may be skipping some of our family science lessons.
We also like Melanie’s selections! My DC still bring up Archimedes & the Door of Science on a regular basis. 😉
