My daughter will turn 6 in February and we are currently doing kindergarten together. At this point, I don’t feel like she will be ready to progress to first grade next fall but if we choose to do another year of kindergarten then she will turn 7 as a kindergartener. Any advice?
What exactly does “not feeling she will be ready to progress” look like in kindergarten? What are you doing with her right now for kindergarten? It’s totally fine to wait to start first grade, but things change rapidly when they are so young. Enjoy her being 5 and don’t do formal lessons unless she’s asking!
Embrace where she is and don’t worry about grade levels. Kids can make a stunning amount of progress in the early years as they mature, so you really can’t begin to guess what she’ll be doing next fall or the end of the next school year. Just keep moving ahead at her pace and enjoy it!
First grade for your daughter will be whatever she is ready to do when she is that age. It doesn’t need to bear any resemblance to anyone else’s first grade year. I have had one first grader who was reading several books a week and narrating everything well, beginning to write stories and learning to play violin. I had another child who spent her first grade year playing a whole bunch, listening to lots of stories, and spending 10 minutes at a time on reading or math, just a few times a week. That’s what was appropriate for each of them.
Just keep pluggin along at her pace. If you belong to a homeschool group like I do and have to write down a grade on her records just put her in “1st grade” That doesnt change what you do at home though. I have to list grades for my kids and they are all over the place as far as the work they are doing. The little ones dont even know what grade they are in!
I second the others – don’t worry about it. Just focus on the here and now. She’s 5, she doesn’t need anything formal right now at all. Many places don’t start grade 1 until age 7, so there’s really no rush at all.
My kids have all developed academically at different rates, sometimes causing me to wonder and other times to worry.
-Oldest son delayed reading and a lot of writing until the end of 2nd grade, right when he turned 8. Now he is in 6th grade and performing well above grade level.
-2nd and 3rd kids bloomed early (reading at age 4, 3rd grade math in 1st grade, etc) but by 4th grade are at grade level academically but obviously enjoy learning.
Next fall is 9 months away, she’s going to grow heaps between now and then. Last winter I didn’t think my 5yo would be ready for much this year, his kindergarten year, but instead all the kindy work I got for him is too easy and I’ve now moved him on to first grade books (MUS alpha and Spelling you See). Just keep going and don’t worry about next year, kids change so much in 9 months! 😀
