My son will be in 3rd grade next year.  Prior to being introduced to Charlotte Mason and the wonderful Simply Charlotte Mason products, I purchased God’s Design For Life by Answers in Genesis.  We purchased all 3 books as a set (Animals, Plants & the Human Body).  We are doing Animals right now!  I like it!  Of course, we also read living books on various things that we learn about in the book.  I am having a dilemma as I plan for next year!  I am trying to decide if I should do the other 2 books in the series or to do 106 Days of Creation & Considering God’s Creation.  The other option is to use them all!  After all, they are tools and I can use them however I want since they all seem to cover similar topics.  Then there is Apologia??? I wasn’t planning on adding in Apologia in for another year or so.  I would love to hear any feedback from those who have used any of these curriculums or if you just have a child around this age and have some advice or feedback!  Thanks in advance!!!

Since your son is still young, I would do the SCM study now and save the God’s design series for a little later on. They are appropriate for use up through middle school whereas your son will grow out of the SCM science studies since they are geared toward younger children.

We used mostly living books in the elementary years. We pulled out Apologia here and there for something different but we would only do a unit or so and then switch back to living books.

We used parts of God’s Design for Chemistry in 6th and 7th grade, combined with living books, and moved to Apologia middle school science for 8th grade.

We’ve used all three programs separately.  I’ve used the 106 Days/CGC lessons to supplement our science studies as well.  Here is what we’ve discovered:

AIG (Animals)–very open and go–we moved mid-year and this was perfect for that busy time, my DC liked the readings best from this book, most of the worksheets were enjoyable (lots of sketching and labeling that didn’t feel like busywork).  Cons: we like more activities and experiments and there weren’t what I’d consider actual experiments, but that could have just been the book we used.

Apologia (Astronomy & Swimming Creatures)–somewhat open and go, the readings are a bit wordier although they still enjoyed them, wonderful activities/experiments.  Cons: We had a hard time fitting everything in 2 days per week, so we struggled before switching our lessons to 5 days per week.  It takes a full year for us to complete (some families can do 2 books per year) so we missed covering multiple topics in a year’s time.  Also, all the wonderful activities and experiments do add more prep time for me.

106 Days/CGC–my DC loved the notebook pages and experiments, we liked having an overview of several science topics during the year, I felt like nature study was very consistent with all the Science Detective sheets, and we still often talk about calculating wind speed 2 years later!  Cons: I would have liked more readings…adding in CGC’s lessons helped quite a bit, but next time I’d add in more library books too.  My DC prefer science books over history books, so that could just be us.  😉

I think 3rd grade is a great age for 106 Days, but I’d be tempted to use AIG since you already own it.  You could always use 106 days for 4th grade.  And either AIG or Apologia for 5th grade and higher.

Melanie32 – yes, I feel like I lean toward the SCM recommendations!   Apologia  just feels like something we would enjoy better (as the core science curriculum) in a few years! We do love to add living science books as well 🙂

HollyS – thank you for taking the time to give me feedback on all 3!  We really like AIG but do feel it lacks experiments and hands in stuff!  We do feel like adding in living science books helps but we still need some more hands on stuff sprinkled in!  I am glad to hear your feedback on Apologia and we will wait a little longer to add in Apologia!  It is so good to hear you liked 106 Days of Creation and Considering Gods Creation!  That is what I was tentatively planning to do with living books added in!   I can also pull from AIG if I feel like it can add anything beneficial!  There are some great pictures too!  What are your favorite living science books?

Thanks for the great feedback ladies:). This helps so much as I think through our options!  I love this group!
