My son is almost 12, and really enjoys all kinds of computer art design/game design/stop-motion, etc. He’s very artistic and draws many hours of most days. He is wanting to do movie animation, not stop-motion though, he’s done that. I downloaded a couple programs for the Mac that were free, but they are pretty complicated, more for adults using the software for their jobs.
Are there any good software programs available that wouldn’t cost hundreds of dollars, and are fairly simple to get the hang of? He’s willing to work to understand the program well, but just not ready for extremely complicated software. He also doesn’t want very simplistic animation made for younger children, if that made sense.
I just replied to your comment, but misunderstood what you were asking for. Have you tried just searching google and see what results you get?
Try Kid Coder and Teen Coder too. Even if they don’t have what you want, they might be able to point you in the right direction.
My dad recently found a program that teaches computer programming to kids. It was developed by a college professor Randy Pausch. Randy died of cancer but the project lives on. It is called Alice and can be downloaded for free. My dad is going to do it with my son and says the kids will not even realize they are learning computer programming. Hope this helps and here is a link with more info.
Blender 3D is probably the most used free software for modeling and animation. It does have a complex interface but it’s not insurmountable with a little effort and some free tutorials. It’s worth learning. https://www.blender.org
Kahn Academy has a free online course in beginning animation with the software built into their web pages. This is more on learning techniques for good animation rather than using specific software. https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/pixar/animate
If your son is serious about learning the craft, “The Illusion of Life” is a wonderful book to pick up. I’m happy to see that it’s finally back in print after only being available used for many years. It’s written by a couple of classic Disney animators who give both the history of animation and examples of what makes animation feel realistic. http://www.amazon.com/The-Illusion-Life-Disney-Animation/dp/0786860707
