I am trying to figure which route to take in the Individual Studies. My dd age 8 (just turned 8 in March). I see there is a A & B course. Can I do both copy work and teaching her how to print to cursive or would that be over kill? she falls in between the levels so trying to decide. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

The Print to Cursive option incorporates both printed copywork and learning cursive. I’m not positive which of the Individual Studies grades you are looking at; I’ll guess 2nd or 3rd.

If 2nd grade, here are the main differences between the A and B options.
A: for students who need more practice reading aloud and printing to gain fluency
B: for students who would benefit from reading aloud practice and are ready to learn cursive (which includes some printed copywork too)

    If 3rd grade,
A: for students who would benefit from reading aloud practice and are ready to learn cursive (which includes some printed copywork too)
B: for students who would benefit from more reading and writing practice (either printed or cursive)

    Does that help any?

    Sonya,

She is in 2nd grade. I guess I was wondering what if she is in between?

What I would do is use print for copy work, then on the side teach how to make cursive letters, just a letter or two per day. Once letters are mastered move onto simple words then switch the copy work to cursive. My kids figure out cursive pretty quickly, so once they knew the letters were able to do copywork in cursive. Or you could simply do print to cursive and use only that as copy work. I would not double up too much, just to make sure not getting tired of writing.

Or that might have been zero help, LOL. I have used many SCM products, but have not used the new guides.

She’ll be practicing reading aloud in either option, so that main decision is her handwriting. I think my deciding factor would be whether she is ready to learn cursive. If you don’t think she is ready for that yet, continue with the print copywork. If she’s ready and eager to do cursive, go with that option.
