I have a question on Science for my 2nd grader. She doesn’t sit still real long yet and her attention span is about 15 min. Is there a good science that you all can recommend? We did do Burgess Bird and she was bored. If we just use living books any suggestions to fill a year?
Myself personally, at that age, I follow their interests. So, I would ask her what she is interested in, what she wants to learn about and go with that. Once you have a better idea of topics, we could probably give some suggestions.
15 minutes is a great attention span!! My son has about 6-10 minutes, and we have successfully gone through Outdoor Secrets and are most of the way through Pond and Stream. I would highly recommend Outdoor Secrets – it is soooooo interesting! The companion guide is great, too, as it suggests nature journal entries and extra picture books relating to the topic of each chapter. We are enjoying the Pond and Stream companion guide, too, with its picture books, nature studies, short video clips, etc. But we found it best to go through it at a quicker pace than the companion guide suggests. I still think Outdoor Secrets is an amazing place to start!!
I’ve been reading through the Berenstain Bear’s Big Book of Science & Nature with my 6yo. It’s about 200 pages long, but you can read it in short chunks of time. The Year at Maple Hill Farm is another great book. Both have more of a picture book feel that she might enjoy more than chapter books.
You can also add in some fun activities like gardening or growing a plant indoors. Outdoor Secrets has some fun projects too, along with picture book suggestions.
