Well, CM language arts are a lot different than how most of us learned. I found an older post last week that did a great job explaining the big picture of CM language arts that you might find helpful:

There are many reading programs to choose from. I was using Sonlight when I first started and used their 1st grade learning to read program. It used Explode the Code (ETC) and we loved it. When I switched curriculum, we kept using Explode the Code phonics workbooks. They are based on word families. SCM Delightful Reading looks good, but was not available when I taught reading.
Does your son know all of the letter sounds (short vowels)? Can he read simple BOB type books? If not, he would need to work on that more first.
So for language arts, he would be doing copywork, oral narration after you read to him, and learn to read. Spelling (dictation) and grammar starts in 4th grade or later. I think ETC has helped my dc to have good spelling, too. I’ve never done vocabulary as a separate subject. They learn a lot of vocabulary in the context of good living books. For my 4th grader, we are using Writing Tales now. This is what has worked for us, but there are a lot of great programs available.
