I have a lot of question before I order 😉

On the A Child’s Copybook Reader do I need to order Zane Blose and D’Nelian volume 1,2 and 3 ?

Where do I buy the book on narration?

My concerned also is how much time you spend on each subject, this is my second year I am still a new one 😉

My son does not like to read but he loves when you read to him, hopefully this year will be different with this program .He is going to be 7 in September .

    Please let me know

    Thank you

Welcome to SCM. For copywork, you pick the style you like. There is a language arts book in the SCM bookstore called Hearing and Telling, Reading and Writing that covers narration. In fact, SCM has been very generous with their pdf sample to include that chapter for you to read free now. The book is good so far as I have not yet finished reading it.

For second grade, lessons should generally be 15-20 minutes each, with variation in the order of subjects. So don’ t try to do all of your reading all at once. For us copywork is more like 10 min. and math 30-40 min.

What have you tried to use in the past to teach reading? What are you using this year? Some children are not ready until later. Age 7 is not too late. He will likely pick it up okay. You could supplement with http://www.starfall.com and fun foam bath time letters or letter fridge magnets.

    HTH. Blessings.

Well, CM language arts are a lot different than how most of us learned. I found an older post last week that did a great job explaining the big picture of CM language arts that you might find helpful:

There are many reading programs to choose from. I was using Sonlight when I first started and used their 1st grade learning to read program. It used Explode the Code (ETC) and we loved it. When I switched curriculum, we kept using Explode the Code phonics workbooks. They are based on word families. SCM Delightful Reading looks good, but was not available when I taught reading.

Does your son know all of the letter sounds (short vowels)? Can he read simple BOB type books? If not, he would need to work on that more first.

So for language arts, he would be doing copywork, oral narration after you read to him, and learn to read. Spelling (dictation) and grammar starts in 4th grade or later. I think ETC has helped my dc to have good spelling, too. I’ve never done vocabulary as a separate subject. They learn a lot of vocabulary in the context of good living books. For my 4th grader, we are using Writing Tales now. This is what has worked for us, but there are a lot of great programs available.
