I’m working with my 1st grade daughter on addition problems with MathUSee. She did excellent on adding by 0’s and 1’s. But now we are having trouble understanding adding by 2’s. We are on week 3 now when it only took the one week for adding by 0’s and 1’s.

Is this normal for children to not get this at first? I know they have to understand the concrete before they can understand the abstract. We work on the blocks daily and after a week of the worksheets, I’ve added games that we play so we aren’t doing worksheets over and over. I have her build it, write it, and say it. Sometimes she forgets the 1’s and we just mastered them 2 weeks ago. I also printed out the 0’s, 1’s and 2’s addition facts for her to see during meals. And she plays games on the computer. lol

How long did it take for your children to understand and it clicked and they could move on again? Just wondering how long it could take for her to get it. Weeks…months?

Any ideas on what to do to help her to understand what it means to add by 2? I try to show her that for 1’s it’s just adding one more or counting up 1. So for two’s it’s going up 2 more. We also sing the Addtion Songs from MathUSee and she can count by 2 up to 10.

    TIA!

Just keep working at it. You will be thankful for the time you take in teaching her and not moving on before she knows them. Yes, it can take weeks or months; sometimes. But, then other times she might learn it on the first try.

    Just keep practicing.

We’re on the same lesson!  You need to join the MUS yahoo group.  There are TONS of people using MUS in that group and they are SO helpful!  Any question you could think of they have someone who has dealt with the same thing.  My first suggestion is to review skip counting (we did Primer so my daughter already knows how to count by twos).  Then show it with the blocks, build the stair steps and practice counting skipping one and then with the stairs in place put a two block on each number – one at a time, and show how it’s equal in height to the number that is two steps over.  I let my daughter watch the video AND I read the teacher’s manual and try to teach from that as well, as I find they have different tips in each.

Where do I join the MUS yahoo group?

    Thanks, ladies!

Yes, we watch the videos also and teacher manuel info. I’m doing it all! lol Just need to be patient I guess. It’s my first time to teach adding to a child. I’m used to pre-k level. 😉 I’m trying to keep it fun so she looks forward to it each day.
