What special things do your families do for the 1st day of school ? I would like to start some traditions that we can do every year on the 1st day of school. Thanks for sharing.
We don’t really have any 1st day tradition, but I have to tell you this cute story. A friend of mine told me last night that she does an annual Not-Back-To-School party on the first day, which is the day the public schools around here open. They went to Chuckie Cheese’s, I believe. Anyway, when she was putting her youngest into bed that night, she mentioned that youngest needed to get good sleep to be ready for school tomorrow. Youngest thought about that for a minute or two and then started to cry, stating, “The Not-Back-to-School party is a lie!” 😀
We take “school” pictures. We have also measured the children to see how tall they are. We’ve been keeping track of this on a growth chart for years! 😀 This year I’d love to do our first day of school in our jammies but we have outside commitments for the first 2 days. But I’m definately wearing jammies on that 3rd day. 😀 My husband always sings “School Days” to each one on the first morning. (much to their annoyance, I mean delight)
I have seen a first day of school tradition where you ask the child what they want to be when they grown up and add to it each year so you can see the progression.
My 4 yr old has recently told me that she wants to be an adult when she grows up. 🙂
On the “first day” of kindergarten, my kids got their first library card.
We try to hit a popular place in our area on the first day of public school because I know there will be no crowds – places like the aquarium, beach, zoo, etc.
We have always had coffee cake for breakfast and chili for dinner. That’s what I did each year with my brother and sister, and believe me, my mom will call and ask her grandkids what they had for breakfast and what mommy is making for dinner.
The idea about the growth chart and school pics is a good idea, we may have to do that.
And of course, we go out and get all the good deals on glue sticks, pencils, notebook paper etc.Otherwise, that stuff can be really expensive. We need notebook paper now, and I just flatout refuse to pay the current price for it!
We are now schooling year round (44 weeks a year)so I suppose we’ll just say the Tuesday after Labor Day is our 1st “officail” day for the 2009-2010 school year.
