We LOVE that movie and it’s on our “must buy” list. My son first started watching it when he was 7 or 8. My daughter watched it too – she was 4 or 5 at the time, but she wasn’t really interested. There is nothing objectionable that I can think of off the top of my head. The war scenes aren’t graphic, but they do have people getting shot etc. But the war scenes are not a lot of the movie. It was mostly about how he gave his life to Jesus, and how he was seeking the will of the Lord on if joining the war would be against God’s will or not. They don’t have the whole movie on youtube, but they have bits and pieces that you could look at and see. Also, Adventures in Odyessey has a audio drama about Sergeant York. 🙂
Here is the battle scene on youtube. That way you can determine for yourself if it would be too graphic for your children. 🙂 This was pretty much the only battle scene that I can remember. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmRRhxo0RHc
Thanks, Laura. My boys range in age from 5-17. I was hoping we could watch it as a family and it sounds (and looks) like it will be a wonderful film. Blessings to you & yours, Heather
Wonderful message of a man who was radically changed by the gospel and then agonized by the choice between serving his country (by fighting in WWI) and obeying the Word of God. The struggle with his conscience is handled very well, and his modesty is an excellent example to young men. We have watched it and re-watched it many times, from ages 5 and up.
Enjoy – and don’t forget about the other Gary Cooper movies, like “Pride of the Yankees” and “Friendly Persuasion”. Both are excellent for children and adults alike!
Our family watched Sergeant York last night – what an excellent film! Thank you again for the reviews and for sharing the other Gary Cooper titles – we’re all fans now!
Blessings, Heather
