I am looking for books to cover 19th Century America for next year’s history.  (Lewis and Clark, War of 1812, Oregon Trail, Westward Expansion, Underground Railroad, Civil War, into the Industrial Revolution, etc.)

I’m having almost zero luck with the Bookfinder and I haven’t been able to find much on Greenleaf Press or Beautiful Feet either.

I am using Christine Miller’s All Through The Ages, but the books listed for 1st to 3rd grade are books meant to be read independently by a child of such age.  This is working great as far as finding some readers for my 2nd grader next year, but I am looking for narratives to read aloud to them.  My oldest two will be 7 and 5 (turning 8 and 6 in the winter).  I have tried to look at books for the older age ranges to see if they would work, but I feel like I’m just blindly choosing at that point.

Does anyone have anything they particularly liked for this time period?

Lewis and Clark: A Picture Book of Lewis and Clark by David Adler (the series also has books on Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Thomas Edison, and Sojourner Truth for the time periods you’re interested in; may be one on Sacagawea, too)

Oregon Trail: Josefina and the Story Quilt by Eleanor Coerr; Papa and the Pioneer Quilt by van Leeuwen

    HTH,

    Karen

ETA: The Picture Book Bio series also includes Davy Crockett. I also checked the author’s website. He has written one on Sacagawea.

Other books that worked for us:

Stephen Kellogg. Johnny Appleseed; Paul Bunyan; Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett; Mike Fink; Pecos Bill

    Aliki. Johnny Appleseed

Journey of a Pioneer (can’t remember author)

    Clipper Ship (can’t remember author)

Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express

Fuchs. Ride the Wind (Pony Express)

Brenner. Long Way to a New Land; Long Way Westward (immigration). She also has one called Wagon Wheels or something like that. We didn’t use it because I couldn’t find it in time, but it’s supposed to be good.

Westcott. I’ve Been Working on the Railroad

Have you seen BF’s “The Westward Expansion” resource list? Though they may be a bit much for your 6yo, 8yo might enjoy books such as Of Courage Undaunted and The Stout-Hearted Seven: Orphaned on the Oregon Trail.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll look into those. 🙂
