A freshman would conventionally be when they are 14-15, so you could consider him a freshman or a sophomore. If you are going to traditional public school, you start when you are 5. So if you’re not sure what “grade” he is, you could count up from there. That said, don’t get hung up on grade level too much.
My 12 year old daughter is a 7th grader. Here is what she does daily:
Apologia General Science
Math
Latin
History (Ancient Civilizations and the Bible)
Literature selections
Our Mother Tongue
Spelling Wisdom 2
The Creative Writer
Wisdom for Life proverbs Bible study
SCM middle east Geography (they do this daily at our house, not weekly)
Fallacy Detective(1x per week)
My 11 year old son does all of those same things except different science program, different writing program, different Bible study. In addition to this, they both have other personal development books they read weekly and some church history books.
For my kids, I think I would be requiring a lot more for them at age 15 than you are requiring. HOWEVER, THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD BE REQUIRING MORE. Every child, family, situation is different. I am only telling you what I would do.
I am not fond of Simply Grammar and I think that a 15 year old boy would probably hate it. But, like I said, every child is different. My son wanted to try Our Mother Tongue and it has worked out well for him, though it is a little challenging.
@Wingstofly…he’s using Abeka’s Health text. He is giving oral narrations + written ones and there is a small portion titled Use Your Knowledge (or something like that) that I have him answer in the same notebook for narrations. He says it has similar topics as Apologia’s General Science Human Body section but more indepth, he likes it. It was a toss up between that and Total Health. Total Health is a much larger text and just wasn’t his thing (I let him look at both and he chose).
He also uses Spelling Wisdom, adds to a Book of Mottoes and Discovering Doctrine Notebook 1-2 times a week, we’re using Module 2 for history, which I handed over the Bible portion to, as well as, the Geography Notebook may be passed on to him. He works better on his own, usually, and having to wait on me is proving to get him behind a bit. We can always make it an option from day to day…like we do certain read alouds. Sometimes he sits in with the rest of the family, sometimes it’s best that he does on his own.
my3boys, what do you use for Latin? gcbsmommy, is Analytical grammers teacher guide easy to use? Thats my stickler for the most part. I am having him Narrate everyday, everything he reads. This may be two much. Also copywork from the Bible.I am not useing a individual Bible study for him. I may look into this. Do you correct their narration or just let them write? I am still confussed on this. Im not sure i think he started when he was 5 so young. He had some reading issues. He is only doing Zeta because I was told not to skip around with Math u see. should I just put him in pre algebra? Ugh! so discouraged this year.:( Thanks for all the help.
@jrs5kids, he is using Getting Started with Latin in addition to Our Mother Tongue which has a definitions/root word meanings. I’d love to dig deeper into Latin, but we just aren’t there yet; I’m certain he can manage it next year. He started Spanish awhile back but that has not continued. I believe he’ll be able to do more next year for foreign language. HTH
I’m not gcbmommy, but I’ve used Jr. Analytical Grammar and I think the teachers guide is easy to use. It’s easier than Easy Grammar, which we’ve tried as well. I do not have my ds narrate every single thing he reads from daily. I have him do a variety of written (usually 1 of these a day) and oral, or if a book has discussion questions built-in I may have him answer them instead. We try to discuss the books he’s reading or things he enjoys and I may count that as a narration, but that always depends. He is not a big “talker” so when he is ready to narrate and/or discuss, I have to be ready to listen
Our dc aren’t math-minded and are probably considered a bit behind…oldest is just now dealing with Pre-Algebra (MUS). He’s getting it, but I may have to pay for a tutor in the future..we’ll see. My middle ds is really not math-minded and is not doing what most of his peers are able to do, but that’s okay with me. We just keep working at it everyday to increase speed, understanding, confidence and enjoyment. You could always test his skills on the MUS website to see where your ds is at and maybe he’s ready for more. HTH
