We are finishing up our living science book and I wanted to go with either the God’s Design (Animals) series or 106 Days of Creation. I already have the 106 Days of Creation book but would have to purchase 101 Science Experiments and Considering God’s Creation for the 3rd Grader. In an effort to save money, how cheaply can I do this? Do I have to buy the Considering God’s Creation TM and Student Book? If so, I will come out better if I go with God’s Design (assuming that I don’t have to buy the TM with that one)…please help!
I don’t have any experience with God’s Design. We have been doing 106 days and do use CGC with it (we’re a bit over halfway finished). For most things, I don’t have to have the TM – I think there have been a few times I’ve had to pull it out b/c the directions weren’t 100% clear or I have pulled it out and noticed that the TM did offer some more insight and made the activity a bit more “profitable” you may say. And there have been some activities we’ve omitted altogether (my son is on the young side for that book). I would say that if the cost of the TM were a major factor, you could leave it out and still get a lot of use out of the student book alone. There are word searches, cut and paste activities, coloring activities, etc. (that dig deeper than what it sounds). I have felt it a good compliment to 106 Days without it being overwhelmingly “schooly.” It has helped add a bit of “hands on” to just our reading – and my son really enjoys the activities. As far as 101 Science Experiments – I found a used on on Amazon or something like that for under $5 (shipped). I don’t recall it being used a ton, so you may be able to just check it out from the library and get an idea for the experiments needed if you couldn’t find a cheap used one. HTH – and maybe some others that have finished or have also used God’s Design can offer more insight.
I agree with mjemom and have used ours in just about the same way. We have all of what was suggested, but if I hadn’t had the TM or 101 Science Exp. we would’ve been okay. But, I can’t say that I’m not glad I had what I needed in those times that I needed more clarity. I’m visual, so having the experiments picture or the TM deeper explanations helped out alot.
I’ve never used God’s Design, so can’t help with that one. Have you added up all the cost of each to see what is best for you financially??
Thank you for these answers! I have added up the cost, I can get 101 Experiments and the Considering God’s Creation Student Book for about the same price as the Student Book of God’s Design…but considering 106 Days is a longer program instead of 1/3 of a year like the book I’m interested in with God’s Design, I think 106 Days will actually be cheaper in the long run.
Anyone have extra encouragement/ reasons as to why God’s Design would be a better choice…or even Apologia now that I think about it?
Okay, so it’s settled. I just found the Considering God’s Creation Student book and TM new on a used curriculum website for $10ppd!!…and I just ordered 101 Experiments for 3.98 ppd off of amazon. I’ve come in $10 less than The God’s Design book. Yaay!
So, after 106 Days (since we go through summer)…should we do God’s Design or Apologia?…any opinions on that one?
We’ve been using Apologia, but just picked up a complete used set of God’s Design (the older version) and it is great. I am definitely going to be using it as the main curriculum, and keeping Apologia for reference or casual reading together.
Sorry Heather, we’ve had a house full of sick kids.
God’s Design covers a greater range of topics; I love the lesson length – short and rich, the book is written conversationally wherever possible, there are good biographies throughout, and good simple experiments. I majored in science in university, so we are pretty heavy on science here.
Apologia is fun, I do like it also. We are going to continue using it casually, but I feel God’s Design will give the kids a better foundation for the work they will be moving into in the higher grades.
