I purchased this for my boys last year.  Their ages were 6 and 9.  Well I quit using it because I needed to get the public school system out of my 9yo.  Well he doesn’t want to be homeschooled.  He has been going through puberty full blown puberty.  I ‘ve bee questioning myself about doing this.. I know the Lord wants me to.  My younger one is fine.  It’s my older one.  I guess my ? is , is this still ok to use.  I want him to want to learn.  He isnt very excited about Jesus either.  He’s technically in 4th grade but behind because he didn’t want to really do schoolwork last year.  I have alot of HS materiial from my older son.  All CM flavor.  I don’t want him to be behind.  And I need to keep both boys studying together so iot doesnt cost me alot.  I am a single mom if anyone remembers me from other posts.  Still no dad involvement.  I do have both boys signed up with 4H which I know will help my older.  Again I just want my boys to have a good education.  I especially want them to have a relationship with the Lord.  Thamks for listening. Tamara – the Christian teachings in this curriculum are much more matter of fact and much less overwhelming than in others I have seen – you may read a Bible verse occasionally and discuss, or draw a picture of a day of creation. I know the first week or so seems like it is all about the Bible. But after you establish the fact that the Lord created the heavens and earth and all things that are in them, it is more science experiment based at first along with a additional book – and towards the end there are more tangible for the kids to learn about (you can’t “touch” light per se, but you can touch a mammal or a reptile).  If your son is really resistant to a bunch of lessons on Creation, combine those lessons into one easy short day to lay the ground. More good is done by quietly explaining it and moving on than arguing.  Arguing doesn’t allow the spirit and mind to work together. =)

I am almost done with this curriculum, and at first I wasn’t sure whether we’d like it.  But I really like that it takes many different areas of science and plots them into a year.  I especially like that I can add any number of activities and resources around us – from our home, in DVD’s, and in our community to make the “learning” more hands on, enjoyable and tailored to my children.

For example, when we were studying rocks we watched a dvd of a volcano exploding, visited several rock museums, hunted for rocks and used books and experiments to identify them and talked to a geologist professor who attends our church.  For fish, we studied them in books, in our aquarium, and then went to the creek to find aquatic creatures there, and went to a fish hatchery place to feed the fish.  We watched movies about fish and drew them in our notebooks.

My point is that this was teaching them all the time both about science and Creation – but they thought we were having fun. Now they can tell me stuff they learned at all those places we went to while the other kids were in the school at their desks and they still don’t realize that it was “Real School” – lol.

I don’t know that I was helpful, but don’t give up on your son or the curriculum! Both are worth the time and effort. =)

Are there any hs groups in your area to be involved in? Do you take many field trips?

I have the 106 Days and plan to teach it, so I am familiar with it but haven’t yet taught it. It looks like it covers a lot of the science areas and hands-on like sheraz mentioned. This may help to find the area of interest to explore the next year. The Apologia science books, Exploring Creation, are more subject focused and are for grades K – 6 (although I think grade 2 and up is more appropriate) and may be good for them to use the next year. Elementary science is not a skill-based subject, so I don’t see how he could be “behind”. Do they go outside to play and explore nature? The 106 Days would give a good overview of all the areas of science if he is lacking in knowledge in any area of science.

Do they see your relationship with the Lord? Do they see you praying, speaking God’s Word, reading your Bible, or singing praise hymns, etc.? Are Bible, Scripture Memory, and hymns part of your school day? http://simplycharlottemason.com/timesavers/memorysys/

If not, I encourage you to ease them into your day. There are tips here on adding in subjects one at a time: http://simplycharlottemason.com/basics/started/transition/

I encourage you to keep on working with your older son at home and praying for him. Read good books to them and encourage a love for learning and they will have a good education. Learning shouldn’t stop when they graduate.
