Handicrafts Made Simple Materials Lists

Here’s a list of the materials used for each Handicrafts Made Simple video. These lists include the tools and materials needed to complete every project, but you don’t have to do all of them at once. There are more details in the booklet included for each craft.

Cardboard & Paper

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Pen or pencil
  • Ruler
  • One-hole punch (optional, but recommended)

Materials

  • An envelope
  • A few sheets of decorative paper or calendar pictures
  • Three medium-weight cardboard boxes, such as medium size Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes OR Two medium-weight cardboard boxes and one heavy-weight (corrugated) box, approx. 11 1/2″ x 13″ each
  • Ten or twenty blank sheets of 8 1/2″ x 11″ copy paper
  • String or yarn
  • Five large cereal boxes (empty)
  • Two 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheets of card stock paper
  • Adhesive tape or glue
  • Plastic drinking straws or wooden popsicle sticks

Extras

  • Decorative supplies, such as paints, stickers, markers, crayons, etc.
  • Two paper towel tubes or a stack of small paper cups

Crochet

Tools

  • Plastic or metal crochet hook, size H (size 5)
  • Plastic or metal crochet hook, size J (size 6)
  • Scissors
  • Large darning needle (optional, but recommended)

Materials

  • Cotton yarn, one ball of worsted weight, 150 yards in a ball
  • Acrylic yarn, worsted weight, in your choice of colors
    1. Two balls approximately 170 yards each
    2. One ball approximately 812 yards (one pound of yarn)
    3. (Optional third ball of 170 yards or smaller for practicing)

Hand Sewing

Tools

  • Hand-sewing needles
  • Pins

Materials

  • Eight cotton fabric fat quarters per person
  • One 500-yard spool of all-purpose (or multi-use) thread
  • One 9″ x 12″ rectangle of craft felt per person
  • One 12-oz. bag of polyester stuffing

Extras

  • One button in your choice of size and style
  • Two yards of yarn or string
  • Ribbons, lace, extra buttons (optional)

Knitting

Tools

  • One pair straight knitting needles, US size 7 (approx. 9″ long)
  • One pair circular knitting needles, US size 7 (approx. 16″ long)
  • One set of four or five double-pointed knitting needles, US size 7
  • Scissors
  • Darning needle

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn, approximately 70 yards
  • Worsted weight acrylic yarn
    1. Approximately 100–200 yards for the scarf
    2. Approximately 150 yards for the hat
    3. Approximately 120–200 yards for the socks

Optional Yarn for Bonus Patterns

  • Worsted weight acrylic yarn, approximately 100–200 yards
  • Worsted weight cotton yarn, approximately 90 yards

Woodworking

Note: You do not need to have all of the power tools. They are demonstrated throughout the lessons, but alternate hand techniques are also given.

  • One 1″ x 6″ board of maple or birch, at least 3 feet long
  • One 1″ x 6″ board of rough cedar, approximately 8 feet long
  • One 1″ x 4″ board of poplar, 4 feet long (or another straight-grained wood)
  • One 1″ x 6″ board of poplar, 6 feet long
  • One 1⁄4″ dowel rod
  • One 3⁄8″ dowel rod
  • One package toy car wheels with 1⁄4″ holes
  • Assorted screws, nails, and other small hardware
