When you start written narration should you expect to start off with reading material that is easier for them than what they have been doing for oral narration and then progress from there?

I wouldn’t necessarily choose easier reading material but I would assign shorter readings in the beginning. It’s already a huge leap for some children (i.e. mine) to transition to writing vs. saying their narrations. I just scale way back at first in the amount I’m expecting to narrate. That encourages them to be willing to add in a few details rather than bare bones.

Yes, shorter reading not necessarily easier and expect their spelling to go waaayyyyy downhill!  Mine can spell words outoud to me but when they have to write it in a narration they can’t seem to spell even the simplest of words correct.

Okay, that makes more sense than easier reading.

That is interesting, Kristen, about your kids’ spelling…….I have one child that spelling out loud is much more difficult for her than writing it out!  Just the opposite here.
