This is just a quick question on managing the 4 and 1/2 hour day regulation in my state of GA. . . . . . What is the best way to keep tract w/o feeling legalistic about every minute? I have 4 kids and my oldest is in 5th grade. . so honestly w/ her it won’t be a problem but with the other 3 I am wondering. . . . . .
Also, any ideas or thoughts on homeschooling and moving at the same time. . . we are renting right now and looking to buy a house soon. . . we just moved into our rental a month ago and I quite honestly am already feeling the pressure of how is school and moving going to work. Just need some thoughts on those two areas!
Thank you for all your counsel and advice you have given me in the past, it was appreciated!
We moved 2 months after starting school last year and I understand the pressure you must be feeling. We had the children help as much as possible with the move and counted that as life experience. They also did quite a bit of independent work while I spent time doing the necessary things associated with the move. Our oldest was very helpful during this transition and took on some of the read aloud assignments and dictation for the youngers.
Do you have to turn in a log book of some sort showing what time you spent on each subject or does GA operate on an honor system? Here in TN we just report what subjects we’re covering, not a time log.
I had to relax a bit (actually a lot ) on watching the clock to make sure we got our “4 hours work required”. Looking back it was a great way to transition into the CM way of schooling. I learned so much about the “gentle art of learning” out of necessity! We used last year to work on much needed habit training and heart discipline issues which have proven to be essential foundations for academic learning. (Shhh–don’t tell, but I counted those hours as part of ‘school’!!) Academically, I made sure they covered the basics (math, reading and writing) during that season and as time allowed we did some science. Other than reading the Bible everyday, we didn’t do history.
Time spent reading before bed, cooking together, enjoying music in the car on the way to the grocery store, caring for pets you may have, performing daily chores, free drawing, etc…(you get the picture) can all be counted as learning time. So when you think abut it, you probably already ‘school’ many more hours than the 4 1/2 that are required.
HTH some, and I hope your move is as smooth a transition as possible.
I agree with MJ wholeheartedly..life is learning so I don’t really keep up with hours just days. Here in KY we are required to do 6 hours..or I think they state it something like …”equivelent to 6 hours instructional time”. So I count everything (in my mind) as being school..I don’t report it or write it down per se.
I think I heard something about being able to count Sunday School, or Awana, or programs like that to so if your kiddos are involved in those that could be a possible “learning/school time”. And don’t forget the music lessons and such..you can always count those too.
I hope everything goes well with your move..how exciting!!
Thank you guys so much!!! It is so nice to get on here, share my heart and know that their are momma’s out there who have walked those “hallowed halls” before me!!!!
You are a blessing!
Christy
