I assigned Jack’s Insects Study to my year 5 student this past year, and she is way behind on it (according to my original schedule).  I realized later in the year that she really did not like the book Jack’s Insects and went back and forth on insisting that she finish it.  I REALLY do not like us to start something and not finish it; on the other hand I want her to enjoy the science material I assign to her.  Also, the narration questions were a little bit too hard for her to do on her own.  So, I can help her, and I have done that some but I do not really have the time right now to add science to guided time with her.

She did enjoy the other books that went along with the study.

This whole year she has been devouring books on birds, bird houses, bird gardens, etc.

Again, I hate to ditch Jack’s Insects Study……any thoughts on maybe just doing part of it.  Maybe she needs to be stretched a bit and we could finish over the summer.

Would love to hear any thoughts!

We haven’t finished it yet, either, but I will say that my kids really enjoyed it as a read-aloud.  My initial plan was to read-aloud and have them do the notebook on their own, but we haven’t been able to quite fit it in.

We enjoyed it as a read-aloud a lot more also, although I did not read entire chapters at a time. I found a good place to stop after a few pages. We didn’t have the notebook for the first half of the book and we learned a lot. The girls remember quite a bit and remind me when we see something we read about.

If the notebook is sucking the joy out of it, have her do an oral narration or draw and label a picture of the insect she was learning about, read the extra books if needed, and call it a lesson.
