Hello-
I need some help, and I thought this might be a good place to ask.
I’m working on a Bachelor’s Degree online, and I’m taking a Geography course right now. I have an assignment to write a paper on “China as the Middle Kingdom, population growth issues and industrialization”. I think I’ll be ok on the population and industrialization research. But I’m having trouble with the Middle Kingdom part.
Does anyone have any ideas for some good sources on that? I don’t even understand it. My book is excrutiating–definitely NOT CM style. Boy am I glad I don’t make my kids read textbooks!!!! It’s like the history of the entire world, geographical and otherwise, in 350 pages. It’s killing me.
Anyway, I’d appreciate any help anyone can give.
Thanks!
Angela
shoresmomMemberWhoa, sounds excruciating! I’m sorry I have no idea but I thought I’d give you a bump because there are quite a few brilliant minds on this board You are apparently one of them so all I can offer is encouragement. Go, Angela, Go!!!

Rachel WhiteParticipantAngela, can you give me a more specific time period? I’m not up on the term “middle kingdom”.
Rachel
artParticipantWell, my assignment doesn’t specify a time period. I think that’s part of the problem. My textbook seems to tell an extremely condensed version of the entire history of a country in a few pages. So I guess it’s supposed to be the idea of “Middle Kingdom”. I think it might have to do with an old idea that China was the center of things and surrounded by less civilized people. I think the Chinese name translates to something like “center place or kingdom”.
Anyway, thanks.
houseofchaosParticipantI love the books here:

Unfortunately, I haven’t read much about China yet, and can’t help with specific Middle Kingdom information. 🙁 I think you are right, in that they believed they were the only civilized people, surrounded by barbarians.
