I loved the topic on 12 yr olds and reading options. Now I’m wondering about the little bit older crowd. The early teens and more advanced readers? My son has already gone through the 6-8 books he was to read for literature for the year. It’s only November? AHHH
He liked the Gary Paulsen series, My Side of the Mtn Series, Shilo, Rascal, (loved) The Giver, likes King Arthur type books, but does not like things that seem childish; animals talking to eachother, things like that.
He has read this year Canoeing with Cree, The Return of the Indian, Call of the Wild, The Curiosity Shop, Wild Trek, With These Hands..
So he obviously needs more reading? What do you suggest? I’d like to make him
MonicaParticipantHas he read Where the Red Fern Grows? That’s another great book for pre-teens. My DS isn’t quite that age, yet, so I don’t have too many recommendations.
RobinPParticipantStephen Meader books are excellent as are Merritt Parmalee Allen.
csmammaParticipantMisty, how about?
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
- The Bronze Bow
- I am David
- The Green Book
- The Good Master
- Snow Treasure
- Sounder
- Maniac Magee
- Dear Mr. Henshaw
- Nothing to Fear
- From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil and E. Frankweiler
- Indian Captive
All of these my oldest enjoyed. Most are Sonlight suggestions.
sherazParticipantOne of my friends who is doing a TJEd with her kids, had her 14 yo reading James Fennimore Cooper’s series. I am not sure what the reading level is, but the series ends with the Last of the Mohicans. I have not read them, but they sound fascinating. =)
Leah ILMemberMy 14 year old is a reader. Right now he is reading a lot of short stories- I keep bringing home different collections and we are both reading them. He has gone through an O. Henry collection of stories, and next I am thinking maybe Tennessee Williams..not sure, I have to preview some things.
Other books he has read over the past year or two:
To Kill a Mockingbird
Huckleberry Finn
Lord of the Flies
Night
The Once and Future King (reading now)
A Separate Peace
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
The Redwall Series
smartypantsParticipantThe Yearling
Lord of the Flies
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
books by Walter Dean Myers (some of these contain some very rough language as they are based on real people’s lives, including the author)
Gulliver’s Travels
Johnny Tremain
The Giver
The Chosen
books by Jules Verne
Edgar Allen Poe stories
Frankenstein
I’ll go check my shelves for more.
