Ok so I am very old school and don’t know how to use the LibriVox.Embarassed

Can someone explain to me if I go in and see a book in blue that I want to listen to, how do I do that?

Can I put it on my computer somehow or a disc or something would even be better so I can just pop it in and listen anytime.  Or do I have to be online to listen to it?

Thanks for being patient with a very simple person!

I’m very simple and would love to know, too:)

You can listen online, but I always burn it to a disc.

You download the book to your computer.  (I always use the zipped file.)  Once it is in your download file, you have to unzip the file to get access to all the chapters.  You can choose to save those chapters in your download files or you can save them in another file.  Once this is done you can save them to your flash drives or CD’s – or even just listen to them on the computer without having to go online.  I burn it to disc and delete the files to save space on my hard-drive for other things.

I have upwards of 30 classics that we have burned to disc and we love them. I printed the disc covers that Librivox created and put all the discs in jewel cases with those covers.  I have found that it will spark my kids’ interest where a plain disc doesn’t. lol

I know this should have sounded simple for me.. but it didn’t :0(  Zip, unzip, downlaod, flash drives, CD’s, oh my.  I might have to find a computer geek in my area and pay to have him teach me!

It’s really not hard, Misty, it just sounds like it.  I promise… =)

    To download:

    1. Log onto librivox.org and click on “librivox catalog”

    2. Enter the name of the book you are looking for and hit search  (I am using Treasure Island as an example)

    3. It brings up 3 matches (this will change on each book – there are different readers and versions occasionally)

    4. Click on the version you want (I am clicking on the first one for this example – it brings up the page with that selection on it.  Usually there is the title, author and brief summary, then a list of options)

    5. On the list of options, click “zip file of entire book”.  This automatically starts the download to your computer and shows a little clock on the left bottom of my screen – I am using Google Chrome on Windows XP.  When it is done downloading the little clock thing disappears.

To unlock and listen or prepare to burn:

    6. You can click on the download button at the bottom on your screen – or look in “My Documents” in the “download” File.  In Windows a little screen pops up.

    7. Click on “Extract all files” on the left of the screen.  It will start the Extraction Wizard.  Click on next.

    8.  Now it wants to know where to store them.  I just leave them in the download file since I am not keeping it after I burn it, so I just click next.  This will take a few seconds.

    9. When it is done, click finish.

10 Another screen will come up with all the files (chapters) in it.  You can choose to listen, to burn or just close it down.

    To Burn:

You have to have a CD burner in your computer.  I did not so I bought one at Staples.  It was a little high, but I have used it for so many things that I easily saved money in the long run.  Using librivox has expanded our little audio library a lot. =)

    I hope this helps.

Misty, Sheraz gave you good instructions. I know it sounds more difficult than what it really is. I hesitated at first, and even bought some on e-bay. But it is cheaper to make your own discs. You just have to go in and try it and you will see that it is not that bad.

Also, I burned about 14 hours to one disc by keeping them in mp3 format and my CD player in the kitchen and the van are capable of playing mp3 format, (as some dvd players are also capable of playing). There got to be so many tracks, that it was hard for me to get it straight what was on there and in what order, so I wrote the track #’s on the top of the disc with a thin permanent marker.

If you get stuck on a step, just come here to see what to do next. 🙂

    You can do it.

This is great printing it out as we speak! You ladies are so talented.  I would be afraid my son would take my computer apart, lol , as he does with everything.

I simply subscribe in iTunes and it automatically downloads to iTunes on my computer. iTunes is free and works on both pc’s and macs. That’s the simplest way. From iTunes I can sync to any mp3 player, iPod, phone wIth capabilities for playing mp3s OR burn to a disc. I prefer putting the stories and everything else onto iPods and avoid making discs. One less thing in my house, you know.

    Misty, it’s actually quite simple.

    1. Go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/ and download iTunes onto your computer as you would any application.
    2. Go to the resource on http://www.librivox.org and find the resource.
    3. There are 6 bullet points under the description. The sixth has a link that says subscribe in iTunes. Click it. It will automatically download to your iTunes application.
    4. From iTunes you can manage all of your music, audiobooks, etc. putting what you want onto your devices.

Christie – let me tell you about my crazy itunes problem, and see if you can help me get past it.  I would love to do just what you described, because when you subscribe in itunes, it saves it like a podcast and it keeps your place for you, right?  But here is what happens when I do that – it looks fine in itunes, but when I dump it on my ipod it puts the list in reverse order and I CANNOT get it to reorder.  So the last episode is first on my ipod.  UGH.

So I have been getting the zip file etc putting that on itunes and making a playlist and listening that way… I have listened to tons of books that way and it is fine, but it bugs me that I can’t figure out why the reverse order thing happens 🙁

Even if I make a playlist and drag the subscribed files over into it in the right order, it still puts them in reverse order on the ipod.    WHYYYYYYYY lol.

Anyone have any insight for me?  Doug?

BTW I love librivox and it is totally worth figuring out how to get the books – I have listened to so many wonderful books!
