For those of you using Truthquest History and SCM History Modules together, how do you schedule these so that the TQ Commentary fits in chronologically with the SCM Modules? Hope that makes sense.

Thanks and may His face shine upon you!

    Hi Heather,

Did you ever work this out? We have been using TruthQuest for a couple of years now and I love her commentary. But, I am really felling led to do the SCM Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt this coming year. I would like to still use the commentary from TruthQuest though. Thanks for your help!

    Blessings,

    Danielle

I know this post is old, but I did not see any answers from anyone, and I’d love to know what you guys do!! Csmamma, did you ever get a system down for combining the two guides? Do you follow the SCM guide and add in the TQ when it’s relevant? I’d love to hear what others are doing! I have Both guides for Ancient Greece this year, and it can be a little overwhelming trying to juggle both. I love the TQ commentary, so I don’t want to part with it! Anyone out there doing both TQ and SCM? How is it going?

Although I don’t use the SCM study guides, the only idea I can come up with take some time to go through each and as you go through the SCMST, make a some sort of “mark” to direct you to read the TQ Commentary at the appropriate place.

What do you think about that? Is that feasable?

    Rachel

That sounds like a great idea! I could just write in the page number of the TQ section I want to read, thanks Rachel.

We are currently using SCM module 2 and TQ Ancient Greece.  I did what someone else recommended on another post and that was to highlight or underline SCM sources in the TQ guide.  This helped a lot.  I try to read the commentary ahead of time for myself to share with the children and sometimes I assign it for reading to my older children.  I like to have it handy because this is something I have never studied myself and have no idea how it all comes together.

We do exactly as teachme2learn, using TQ as our main history guide and highlighting the titles from the SCM modules. I tried doing it the way Rachel had suggested, but found way too much of the TQ commentary being left out- which imo is too rich to miss.

We do the same as teachmetolearn and csmamma.  Highlighting (well, I pencil check:) the SCM book choices really helps to narrow the HUGE amount of TQ suggestions.  Good luck!  Gina

Oh, these are all great suggestions. I have a lot to ponder over…Here is another question: In the TQ guide, when a book is suggested for your older students, do you give them a time frame to finish before moving on? Do you move on and let them read at their own pace? Sorry for all the questions, I am still so new at combining the TQ and SCM. Kristi

While I am pondering….Just to be sure….Some of you use TQ as your main history guide and plug in books from the SCM “modules” where they fit. Does anyone use the SCM as their main guide and plug in the TQ where it fits? I am sort of flip-flopping which way to go with this!!! For those that use the TQ as your main guide, how to you decide how much time to spend on something before moving on? I like that it has no day to day planning making it more relaxed, but then I also dislike it!! Sometimes (like when my littles are all crying) I need somthing to say “do this today”Embarassed (sigh) Thanks for all the insight into what you guys do. I love how helpful everyone is on this forum.

    Thanks so much,

    Kristi

I should clarify that I use the SCM module as my main guide and add TQ in at appropriate times or for additonal reading material.  I had the TQ guide before I ever heard about SCM but I had a difficult time as you said in not having something concrete or specific in what to do when things are just not going smooth.  This is where SCM modules were my ‘lifesaver’.  I have to confess that neither organization nor planning are my strong points and Planning Your CM Education helped out a lot so that I’m prepared for more stressful days.  I use the TQ mostly for extra commentary and for extra reading material (leisure reading) and narration ideas.  I use SCM sources for our main instruction and assignments.  I love SCM and if I want a little extra, TQ is there for me.

I found the original post on combining SCM and TQ that I found helpful.

Oh, I didn’t actually highlight but rather marked in TQ with pencil.

We sort of flew by the seat of our pants this year (our 1st using TQ/SCM).  I lined up all the books….some together books, others for kids to read independently.  I’d open my TQ guide and read the commentaries, see what books I had marked, wait for all the books to be finished before the next commentary came up, etc.  But we’re not as far as long as I’d like to be to finish the guide in 1 yr., so next year I think I’ll do as the Planning Your CM Education book says and figure out how many chapters/pages need to be read each week to reach our goal.  HTH some:)  Gina
