    Hi all!

I wanted to ask some questions about starting History with my – up and coming – Grade 1 daughter. I have heard from many seasoned CM homeschooling mothers that they strongly recommend starting with American History in the early years. I’ve heard many reasons why this should be done. For some online information you can check out the website Beautiful Feet Books, click on “About Us” and “Articles”. There are two articles about History that are helpful to read.

So while I’m feeling excited to start American History in the early grades I also really like the look of SCM’s History Modules. I enjoy the thought of having two 6-year cycles to move through. Keeping as many children as possible reading the same thing is a plus in a growing family, I’m sure! I love that the history readings go alongside your Scripture readings (our most important readings). I also think it’s great that Geography and map drill are done as you come to those parts of the world in your reading.

    But I do have a few thoughts/questions:

Has anyone tried doing the SCM History Modules – starting w/ Module 1 in Grade 1 – and doing American History books alongside up until late elementary ages? I wonder if this would be a lot of work?

Also, I wondered what folks think about the reading selections for the younger grades? Are they more of a cultural study of the times? I’ve heard that good “living book” World History literature options for younger children are few and far between, as opposed to the larger selection of Am. History for little ones.

I’m excited about SCM’s History Module I but I’m definitely feeling as though I should start alongside side of it a trail of Am. History as well. My biggest concern is that it’d be too hard to do together.

You could read alongside your Module 1, Edward Eggleston’s Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans. It’s a great intro to the most basic figures of our history, short chapters and in story form. Also, William Bennett’s The Children’s Book of America and then add in in audio form, which is easy to implement in the car, rest time, etc., patriotic music and stories like:

    Color the Patriotic Classics

    Wee Sing America

and stories from Your Story Hour Collection, specific to American History. The best prices on these, other than used somewhere, is at LES.

Come Lincoln’s B-day, Washington’s B-day, Independance Day, Thanksgiving, etc. plan books for those times to read just on that day or a couple days up to it.

That combination, easy to insert, will help spark the interest for your own country and start familiarizing them with important names and good American ideas, presented through stories and song. You can even use a BOC (or your timeline) to add in the people at the appropriate times.
