OK, now I have a son (10) that use to be a great speller. He was even spelling words for my younger son (8). It seems that my older son can’t spell anymore. I don’t know what happened but he misses almost all of the words I give him. He really has to work at it. He is a really good reader but now my younger son can out spell him and tells him how to spell words and corrects him if he spells them wrong.

He understands that some people are better in different area but I am wondering if anyone else has experianced this strange thing before. Also, I was thinking about doing “Spelling Wisdom” this year but not sure if it would help. Especially because he is having difficulty spelling the simplest of words.

I thought maybe it was just a fluke but now I am sort of worried . Everything else seems fine but I am not sure what to think about this spelling problem.

I went through the words that he should know but he will get them wrong week after week. We spent 3 weeks on some and he was still missing them. Even when he was verbally spelling them to me.

Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

                               Blessings.

We made a game out of our spelling words. My daughter would study the words. We would go outside if was nice or find a good place inside if it was raining or snowing. I would tell her the word. She would spell it out loud while taking one step forward for each letter. If she had it right, she got to stay where she was at. If she got it wrong, she had to go back ten steps. We set a goal to reach at the beginning. When she reached the place we had decided on, we were done practicing and she ‘won’. My daughter is autistic, but it seemed to help her. We do use Spelling Wisdom, and she loves to do the dictation exercises. Maybe the physical activity combined with the studying will help your son.

That sounds like a good idea. How far do you usually leave for stepping? 🙂

I started out with a few feet. Now we travel the whole length of the yard witch is probably about thirty feet. It is a little time consuming, but we don’t do this all the time. We usually play this game once a week or once every two weeks. That way it stays exciting. The best thing is that it doesn’t cost any money. By the way, if it is taking too long and she doesn’t make it to the end, I ‘win’.

Also, I was thinking about doing “Spelling Wisdom” this year but not sure if it would help.

One of the nice things about “prepared dictation,” which is the technique used in Spelling Wisdom, is that your child is learning the words in the context of literature. That provides mental connections for the words to help make them stick. If you’re not sure about Spelling Wisdom in particular you can try it out with some of the passages in the sample download, or just try prepared dictation with literature passages of your own choosing. We have a preparded dictation video on YouTube if you want a simple overview of how it works.

I use Spelling Wisdom for my daughter. This was a game I made up to help her with words that she was still having trouble with. Sorry if I was unclear.
