My 5 yr old Hp Printer has finally succumbed to the latest Updates and refuses to reprint. LOL! I bought anew Canon and my husband is taking it back to the store as it managed to freeze my computer during the installation process.
I have an Acer Windows Vista that is about 3 yrs old. I need to find something that will work with it. Just basic scanning and printing of pictures and worksheets type of stuff.
Would you all give me some input on what you use and what would be a cost /ink efficient printer for a fmaily of 8?
We have a Kodak ESP3 – it was kinda pricey for a printer (about $100 at the time), but it copies, scans and prints. It’s not small so be prepared to give up a little desk space BUT!!! at Walmart I get the printer refills both a color and black cartridge for $25 and they seem to last a long time for me. Now, I did recently have to buy a new printer head, after owning it for about a year and a half – it was $25. I have to say that despite all of that I’m very happy with it, mostly because the cartridges are so inexpensive and I have to replace them about as often as I did my old HP ones which were $45 to replace. I would definitley buy the Kodak again, though I would probably spend a little more for wireless.
I have been happy with my Brother MFC-7420. It is a laser printer. I buy a $35 toner on amazon about once every 6 – 8 months, depending on how much I print and copy. I use some tricks to making the toner last, like put dark tape on the sensor hole and shake the toner when I see poor printing. I use it for a small business, personal, and homeschool. It was recommended to me at a local office supply store and it had good reviews on amazon. I think it retails for $200 but I thought I seen it in the Staples or Office Max sale flyer for $149. I got mine for $125 two years ago with some Internet searching. It is basic black and white printing and copying. It is far cheaper on ink than my deskjet because the ink lasts much longer. Hope you find a good one.
I have a Brother laser printer and a Canon All in One. I do a lot of printing, and a warning to those who buy a Canon, the ink mounts up – in fact that is where these companies get you – the ink gets awfully expensive. I am now cutting down my printing. Canon to replace all the cartridges in them is anywhere from $60 to $80 and they run out quite quickly. Don’t get me wrong I love Canon printers I think they have great quality, though the MX350 is not recommended in my opinion for photos – but they are ink guzzlers. I was looking at the Kodaks with the cheaper inks at one point, but decided against it because though the ink is cheap, the print head often needs replacing as someone above mentioned. A lot of reviewers I have seen have said the same, so that gets expensive as well. No easy answers, but be careful of ink prices – in this economy we need to be aware of what we are getting into. Inkjet printers tend to be more expensive on supplies than laser printers. It might be worth spending more on the printer to save on supplies in the long run.
I have a Samsung all-in-one color printer/copier/scanner/fax that I’m quite pleased with. It prints and scans very well, even wirelessly, and is very quiet. As someone else mentioned, the units from Brother are nice too. Their laser printers tend to be a bit noisy, so you might want to test one in a store if that’s a concern for you.
What is the ink like for the Samsung Doug? I am always looking for a good printer – I use it a lot husband’s work as well as school – so am curious. I like my Brother duplex printer but the Canon I have at the moment is a usless for photos and not as good as the last Canon I had – plus the ink just does not seem to last like it used to in the previou model.
We’re going to be in the market for a new printer pretty soon as well, and I’ve been wondering if it would be worth it to get a laser jet this time around. I know there is generally more intial outlay for one, but probably cheaper in the long run since you don’t have to replace the toner as often as the ink cartridges in the ink-jet type. Right now, with the amount of printing I do, I have to replace the black ink cartridges in our HP inkjet roughly every 2-3 months and the color about every 6. I’d imagine we will probably do more printing than I have been over the course of our next field term as our kids get a little older and I have more than 1 doing school. It can be a huge pain to replace them because we can’t always get them where we live overseas, and then have to wait for a month or more for someone in the States to send them to us. (Buying locally is not really an option at all.) I’m starting to wonder if it would be better to go with a laser jet this time around and reduce some of that frustration. Anyone ever done any kind of comparison about how much printing you need to do on average to make the higher up-front costs of a laser jet worth it compared to the higher ink costs of a cheaper inkjet? (I realize it probably varies widely based on the exact model of printer that you have…but just wondering in general if it’s even worth looking at a laser jet this time around.)
Stephen came home that night with an Epson WorkForce 633. I’m gonna be holding my breath to see how long the ink holds. I did find that Encore Ink (homeschooling family) sells for refills and cartridges at reasonable prices. I will be checking in with them about this printer later on. Now, to settle in to using new equipment ( not a favortie thing of mine to do.) I’m and old stick in the mud person that doesn’t like a lot of change. I’m working on this
