Today I was placing holds on a couple dozen Eric Carle books and thought I would share what we do. I try several times a year to put together a basket of as many books as possible that I can gather from my own collection and from the library system from one author. We have done Eric Carle, Dr. Suess, Leo Leoni, Tommy de Paola. We take some time over a month or two( renewing books as needed) to read through them. If I can find simple easy biography information then I share that casually with them. Sometimes we try to immitate some of the artwork fo the author or even the storytelling style. My younger ones love this every time we do this. The olders like it too and often listen in! Thought others might like this as a summer addition to literature.
Do you all have any other authors to suggest gather collections for a book basket?
AFthfulJrneyParticipantWow!! This is a lovely idea! Definitely copying it for the summer!
Hoping others chime in with some more authors! 🙂
rejoicevermore13ParticipantRobert McCloskey is alwasy great! also we love Lois Ehlert’s illustrations though the writing style is definitely geared to the very young! and Jan Brett!! we love her versions of the Three Little Bears and the Owl and the Pussycat especially! awesome illustrations. a few more ideas at least. i will try to think about some more!
rejoicevermore13Participantoh and Thomas Locker…a lot of his are more nonfiction style…but his illustrations have captured my kids (2,4&5) attention immensely. i dont recall for sure if he wrote most of the books he illustrated, or if he was just the illustrator:) maybe others remember? but we have really enjoyed all the books he wrote our library owns! but he has a lot of books. Patricia Polacco is also another author my children have greatly enjoyed, especially the Keeping Quilt. a definite favorite here!
BenitaParticipantOh yes, rejoicevermore13. I have done Jan Bret as well. I have some Robert McCloskey. I will add that to the list. Patricia Polacco’s book, Just Plain Fancy has always been a favorite to me. I am thinking of doing Gail Gibbons this year as well.
andreamParticipantGood idea.
We have enjoyed Margaret wise brown books. It is fun to see some of the same illustrations in her different books
eawernerParticipantGreat idea!
abbynellieParticipantThis is a wonderful idea! Can’t wait to try it out!!!
Karen SmithModeratorDon Freeman is another good author.
JanellParticipantGreat idea.
These authors/illustrators came to mind:
Barbara Cooney (Roxaboxen, Miss Rumphius, and Island Boy are favorites)
Jackie Morris (exquisite art)
and books whimsically illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger (fairy tales)
sherazParticipantFun idea! How about these authors:
Patricia Polacco
Peggy Parrish
Arnold Lobel
Syd Hoff
Laura Numeroff
Robert Quackenbush
Nancy White Carlstrom
Marcia Brown
Don and Audrey Wood
Trina Schart Hyman
Diane Stanley
Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales – There are many with some wonderful artist’s illustrations
Jerry Pinkney – I really like his Ugly Duckling adaptation & illustrations
BenitaParticipantOhh I knew I would get some great ideas here! I also thought of Eloise Wilkins Little Golden books. The ones she illustrated, like Baby Dear, are just precious.
peterfamParticipantWhat a wonderful idea! Thanks for sharing.
