My DD 7 and DS 5 enjoyed “The Boy of the Pyramids” so much and are really heartbroken about the book coming to and end. I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for that age group that is similar to this book? Something for k-1st grade about ancient or todays Egypt? I looked at “Letters from Egypt” but think this is a little bit too advanced for them.
Per a recommendation here, we are reading Sojourn in Africa. I have four children (8th, 6th, 4th, & 1st). We started Letters from Egypt and it was like pulling teeth to read it. No one (even me) really liked it. So I got the book a few weeks ago and we are three chapters into it. The kids are all really liking it (even my 1st grader). We just started The Boy of the Pyramids this week and everyone liked it so far too (we’re using it as a read aloud of us all).
We loved the book called Once Upon A Time in Egypt by Francis Kent Gere. It tells the story of 3 different children in Ancient Egypt – one is a farmer’s son, a noble’s son, and I think an artisian’s son. They all live in the same ares – 2 of them were the noble’s workers so the sons became best friends. It was fun and showed lots of the old culture – how they hunted and fished, how they collected clay to make pottery, how they farmed, how they learned, etc. It was good, and my children enjoyed it as much as BotP. The author went to Egypt, studied her subjects, and then wrote the story to share what she learned. According to the introduction, she basically wrote the story to fit the subject, not the other way around.
It is another OOP book, but I found it at the library. If they ever decide to discard it, I plan to snatch it if I can. =)
