I am just starting to “click around” both of these book lists, weekly schedules, etc. I have used bits and pieces of CM’s ideas in the past 2 years but I am wanting to go more in this direction, so I have just a few questions. 🙂
1. Are the AO and SCM lists different? I don’t think I fully understand where these lists originated…AO is a group of moms? Is SCM a different group of moms putting these lists together?
2. Do you choose one or the other or are you choosing books from both lists or do alot of the books overlap?
3. Do most of you start history with creation? It looks like on the schedules that you would spend an entire year on Genesis through Deut? Do you cycle through this 2x if you stick to this schedule? I started getting confused with years and modules…is a module supposed to be 1 year? (I know, silly, but I’m new and going back and forth through so many links over the past week I’m getting myself all confused!) 🙂
4. I’d love to see a list of what some of you include for a first and second grader. Are you doing strictly CM with math and any phonics needed? What does your day look like?
SORRY so many questions…as you can see I’m just reading over all this and trying to figure out where to jump in there. 🙂 We have been loving what we have been doing so far…with literature based unit studies, nature study, bible, reading lots of good books, etc. Basically I want to use more of CM’s books into our year, still do lots of nature study, add in more consistent composer and artist study.
Hi, Candace. This question about AO vs. SCM has come up a lot. Yes, these are two different groups of moms, the AO Advisory at AO and Karen and Sonya and their families here at SCM.
We have discussed this question a lot, and here are places you can read up on what we’ve already said and then ask away on any specifics!
Yes, a module corresponds well with a year of study. And yes, doing it this way you would get through everything twice. We use mostly SCM now as our framework, but we “imported” a few books we really love over from AO.
To find out more about where these lists began, you’d need to look up the page on the Advisory at the Ambleside website, and you can look here to “meet” Sonya and Karen and their families:
for me personally, I look at AO, SCM and other places (like Truthquest, livingmath and livingscience blogs and websites) and make my own list. I personally think it is the principles of CM that are of most importance…that does of course include living books, which can be found all those places and more;) jmo as a newbie myself. I’ve given myself permission to not be to terribly tied down to one place. on the other hand- i don’t think you can go wrong by picking one and sticking w/ it!
