We have decided next year we will do SCM Mod. 1 with our children.  We are going to use it for a Bible credit (taking out a few things) for 9th grader. so we thought this would be a good time to work on his American history.  We want to break it up into two years.  We would like to challenge him a bit, but have it be interesting.  We would also like to add in documents and have a “cm feel”.

    Thanks!

Beautiful Feet has a US and World History Guide that can be used over two years of high school. You might take a look at that for some ideas. It does include World history, but see what you think.

Another possibility might be Notgrass. He has an Exploring America course for high schoolers. I’m not sure how CM the course is, but the American Voices book looks quite interesting with its documents collection. Maybe you could get that book separately.

One more idea: you could get the three Age of Revolution books from TruthQuest and select certain books from that list for your son to read. He could also read the commentary portions in the TruthQuest guides and do written narrations of the discussion questions given.

Thank you Sonya.  I finally decided the easiest solution for our family will be to do the Exploring America course.  I do love the America Voices book.  We are not really wanting to get into American history right now.  We’ve spent the past three years doing it.  I’m going to have him just write narrations after each chapter, and add to his BOC.  I’m also going to add a few of the books listed in the SCM guide and call it done. Smile

Sonya, I am a bit confused. Is it necessary to add an American History course if we are following the SCM guides through high school?

    Thank you! Laughing

    Nedra,

I’m not Sonya Wink, but I just wanted to say that if I were using Module 5 and 6, I would probably not add in American history.  If I start with Mod 1 then he will not have any american history for graduation requirements.  You might want to check your state requirements.

    Blessings,

Right. If you do Modules 5 and 6, you should cover American History.

What Family books would anyone recommend for Modules 5 & 6?

I am considering using Notgrass American History for my 9th grader, but if I could do some learning together as a family with my 5th grader I would love it.  I don’t want to have 2 separate “schools” going on in our home!UndecidedLaughing

My issue is do you count Modules 5 & 6 as one credit in American History or 2 credits in American History? Fl. state requires one credit in American History and one credit in World History and I’m having a hard time deciding how that fits in with SCM guides and how to “label” the credits. We’re doing Module 3 this year, and I’m counting it as a credit in Ancient History (counts as an elective not a core history), but I’m not sure how to count Modules 4-6. Can anyone help me with this?

I can’t say for sure, since credits can be counted based on content or on hours spent. In my mind, a full year of study would count as one credit. So Module 4 could be one credit of World History. Then since Modules 5 and 6 split their time between World and American History, I would probably count 1/2 credit for each year in each subject. But then when I added the Exploring Government course to Module 6, I counted that as a full credit.

So, . . . I can’t tell you how to count the credits, but when I did it with my oldest two, I counted it this way:

    Module 4 = 1 World History credit

    Module 5 = 1/2 World History; 1/2 American History

    Module 6 = 1/2 World History; 1/2 American History + Exploring Government = 1

Total = 2 World History; 2 American History (could be detailed as 1 American History + 1 American Government)
