My son will be 4 in just over a week, and for the past couple of weeks, he’s been yawning a lot – like most of the day, even with a full night’s sleep, with or without a nap during the day.  When he does sleep on his quiet time, he sleeps for a few hours and it’s very difficult to wake him up earlier than his body naturally wakes him up.  Then he goes to sleep fairly easily again at 8:30pm.  We did just switch to our summer schedule a few weeks ago (first week of May), and both seem to have started about the same time.  But he’s had a few weeks to adjust to the schedule – I wouldn’t think it’s that anymore.  He’s pretty crabby all day long, every day.  And very whiny.  My 3 older girls have also been crabbier and seemingly more tired lately, too, but not to this extreme.  I’m particularly concerned about the little guy – something just seems off to me.  We haven’t changed anything in our diet, either, that thought had crossed my mind.  Do you think it’s just the extra outdoor time/fresh air?  Or is there something else that might be going on here?

    Growth spurt?

Could he be growing? With my boys, just 5 and 7, they sleep a ton and can be pretty irritable when they’re in a growth spurt.

    Does he get enough iron?

I was going to suggest growth spurt and iron! I seem to remember my little ones sleeping a lot at that age and growing quite a bit. I would absolutely work my schedule around his need for sleep. It’s obvious his body and mind are really needing right now, so I would make it a priority to see that his need for sleep is met. I think you’ll know when he’s done when he stops sleeping well at night or has trouble falling asleep at night. Also, try upping his protein and good fat intake. Our bodies need fat for long-term fullness and energy. Carbs are good for immediate energy, but you want him to have long term energy. Some easy ideas that I have are eggs cooked in coconut oil, raw cheese cubes, raw milk, full fat yogurt (all this assuming dairy isn’t an issue for him), boiled eggs, oatmeal with lots of butter or heavy cream, almonds, pumpkin seeds, or cashews, and above all, a daily dose of fermented cod liver oil. I’m sure you’ll see that he will move past this phase more quickly if his nutritional and physical needs for sleep are met.

    Blessings!

Does he drink or pee more than usual? These things can be symptoms of type 1diabetes (which my dd has) but I would expect to see the drinking and peeing and maybe weight loss too. If you have any concerns about that, take him to the dr. You can also PM me if you think those things might apply.

Ah, growth spurt could definitely be it!  Thanks, all!  Of course, right when I am about to change out his clothes for the summer…  Here’s hoping he gets to the next size before tomorrow?  LOL

nebby, thanks for the thoughts on diabetes.  He is not drinking or peeing more than usual, so I don’t think it’s anything like that.  In fact, we are in the middle of potty training (yes, my kids train late – so did hubby <sigh>), and he has been only going 3-5 times a day, depending on his “mood” to avoid or not avoid the toilet.  😛  (Haha, definitely no weight loss, either.  That kid can EAT!  And he definitely is getting heavier.  LOL)
