Product Description

Book 3 is also available in a bundle with manipulatives, supplies, and a gridded math notebook.

You and your child are sure to enjoy these simple, lively lessons that will provide further practice in the processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Your student will master multiplication tables for the numbers 7 through 10; delve further into division with long division and an introduction to fractions; and read, write, and work with numbers up to 10,000. She will also have an introduction to weights and measures with an active hands-on approach— including measures of volume, weight, distance, and time.

For grade 3 you will need The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, Book 3, and a Math Notebook for your child (sized according to your child’s handwriting). Add the optional Book 3 Kit for a helpful collection of objects and Number Sentence Cards corresponding to the lessons.

Charlotte Mason’s Approach to Elementary Arithmetic

Charlotte Mason’s beginning math lessons seem to be tailor made for an early elementary child.

Lessons are mainly oral and are carefully graduated, with your child answering small word problems within her understanding (no reading required). She works out the problems in a hands-on way using a variety of common, everyday objects. This straightforward but interesting teaching guides your child to make discoveries on her own.

A grid notebook is used as the student’s math notebook, in which she records the math concepts she has discovered. Writing is used sparingly, so the effort of handwriting does not overshadow the math concept being grasped.

Progression of the lessons is adjusted to the pace that fits your child best, so you can go slowly enough to build understanding and comfort in the math concepts but not so slowly that the child becomes bored.

Short, lively lessons reinforce a habit of concentrated attention while not overtaxing the child’s ability to sit still. Each day’s work goes no longer than 20 minutes, with 15 minutes focused on the newest math concept and review, and the remaining 5 for mental math.

  1. Kara

I find it difficult to review these books, because the superlatives will sound so generic and gushing. I’ve been homeschooling for fourteen years, and I’ve used books I, II, and III of Baburina’s series with my youngest son, who is both high intelligence and deeply dyslexic. They are without a doubt the best. I will use them without question with my small daughter. There is really no comparison to other curricula, and we have used several through the years. I am a much better teacher with this method. It is the simplest to implement, and the knowledge and facts are deep-seated in the child in a real and tangible way. I have felt no need to supplement at all. Thank you from the depths of my heart, Richele, and SCM for publishing them.

  2. Anna

I just started book 3 with my DD. (We started in book 1) I have been impressed from the start, but when we got to the end of book 2 and introduced division, I was sold! It was like she already understood it! No big, hard, new step! The foundation laid in multiplication paved a beautiful path for division.
She also LOVES doing math in her head – and she’s good!!
This is my favorite math curriculum after 20 years of homeschooling!
    Thank you! Thank you!
