I highly recommend all the SCM Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well books. I purchased all of these books in the electronic format, which is a great option. However, what I like best about these language art books is: the lessons are short and easy to do and older children can work independently. For me, it’s a zero stress lesson. I’m really impressed by my daughters retention too, it’s fantastic. She’s more of a math and science girl, but she actually enjoys these lessons and does them willingly. I’ve seen an improvement in her grammar, spelling and confidence in her own writing ability. I’ve actually purchased one as a gift for a mother who had a child struggling in Language Arts, these books did the trick. I can’t wait until “Using Language Well 4 & 5” come out. Please here my cry, my daughter needs book 4 for next school year. Thanks SCM for helping our children have a well rounded education especially in the Language Arts department!!!

Odd choice of formatting. to have 3 books open at once. There is no reason not to have both lesson 1 of ULW and SW along with any teacher instructions on one or two pages of a single book. This format makes using it difficult.

    • Tamara Bell

We are sorry you found the format cumbersome. We value your thoughts greatly. By keeping the books separate from each other, families are able to utilize only Spelling Wisdom for grammar should they choose to utilize a different grammar resource. By keeping 1 lesson per page, students are able to focus on only 1 lesson.

This system is fantastic. My kids are learning so well, they are very independent and very proud of what they are accomplishing. I’m here to buy the bundle for book 3. Can’t recommend highly enough!

  4. Kristin

I agree with Amanda; the format would be much easier to use if Spelling Wisdom and Using Language Well were combined in one book. I actually buy the e-versions and print them that way, with Spelling pages on the left and Language pages on the right, so that I can bind them together in one book. It’s a doable solution but very time-consuming to get just right with my printer . . . I think this year I’ll use the PDF Preview app to combine and re-order the pages before printing. But perhaps in the future, SCM could offer an all-in-one download set up like that for those that want both together.

  5. Kristin

P.S. I’m also eagerly awaiting Book 4! Will it be out this year?

    • Amanda

      Hi Kristin,

Thanks for your excitement! We’re still working on writing Using Language Well 4. The good news is that Using Language Well 3 goes through all of the grammar a student will need through high school, where Book 4, when written, will likely include added grammar practice with some of the harder passages that appear in ULW 4 and more content including literary terms and devices.

In the meantime, we recommend continued sentence analysis and parsing, and Analytical Grammar’s Beyond the Book Report Season #3: Research Paper and Essay Course.
