Product Description

“If mothers could learn to do for themselves, what they do for their children . . . we would have happier households.”—Charlotte Mason

Mother Culture® is the skillful art of how a mother looks after the ways of her household. With a “thinking love” she creates a culture in the home all her own.

A mother does a lot of taking care, so she needs to take care of herself too. As a mother is feeding and cultivating the souls of her children, she is nourishing her own soul with ideas, while taking a little time for her own play and creativity. Nourished and refreshed, she keeps growing closer to God and into the Christian woman God is designing her to be.

In this book, Karen Andreola draws from her decades of parenting, homeschooling, and marriage to encourage you in your own growth as a mother, teacher, and wife. You will find the principles on its pages to be invigorating—especially if you have a low battery. The ideas she shares will strengthen you in your on-going efforts to create the happy home your heart desires.

The 40 chapters feature Karen’s signature Victorian illustrations and include gentle discussions on

  • your role as queen in the home,
  • taking moments to refresh your heart along the way,
  • nourishing your mind,
  • being brave for five minutes longer,
  • the secret to success: plodding,
  • making brothers and sisters best friends,
  • how courtesy creates a good atmosphere at home,
  • allowing your child to grow as an individual,
  • safeguarding the love of learning in your children,
  • avoiding curriculum traps,
  • encouraging modesty,
  • learning to be content and confident in homeschooling,
  • and much, much more!

  1. Brittney

This is a lovely book with a lot of helpful and encouraging advice. It is structured just like the Charlotte Mason Companion, which makes for easy topical reading. The chapters are short and sweet, perfect for a refreshing 15 minutes in the afternoon with a cup of tea. I will be recommending Mother Culture as an introduction to Charlotte Mason, to be read before or alongside Home Education. For the experienced Charlotte Mason educator there are a lot of great reminders and encouragement that you are on the right track and should keep moving forward.

  2. Kathy

Love it! So encouraging and helpful! Karen gives such great support to our calling as mothers and home educators. Great help and reminders for the Charlotte Mason homeschool. I thoroughly recommend!

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I’ve only read the Forward and first chapter (and taken a sneak at the rest 😏), yet have several passages highlighted! I can tell this is going to be one of those books you don’t want to lend out for fear of never seeing it return 😊. I am just starting to homeschool my first child (5 years old) and this book has the wisdom and encouragement we all need. Karen Andreola has really given us a TRUE GEM here. Don’t hesitate; this one will definitely hold its place on your nightstand.

  4. Jill Cain

Written as only Karen Andreola can write, Mother Culture is a treasure trove of wisdom, encouragement, and ideas that speak to mothers from all walks of life. I slowly savored every word and made generous notes and highlights throughout to refer back to time and time again.

Filled with stories and narratives that illustrate Karen’s points so well, Mother Culture is a book that I could easily relate to in my own life. Sometimes, I wouldn’t even make it through a full chapter without stumbling across some life-changing truth that simply needed more pondering. I would slowly close the book and “think on these things” for a while.

I have homeschooled for 19 years (and my youngest just started first grade). I cannot count the times that “A Charlotte Mason Companion” has given me the precise guidance that I needed for the moment. Mother Culture also had that similar spiritual effect on me, soothing my soul and giving me a fresh perspective on motherhood, family life, and homeschooling.

Being a book lover, I enjoy a wide variety of living books, but being a minimalist, I choose to own very few books that are just mine. The carefully selected few have a permanent home on a very special shelf in my living room where they are esteemed for their great worth.

Mother Culture now sits on that shelf.
